its patriotic to pay taxes....

...unless you are part of the obama cabinet :D

I assume these guys typically have accountants doing their taxes, and granted the tax system is a mess.... but it's just hysterical how this seems to come up over and over again.

I don't give tax cheats a pass because they have accountants.

Probably for the best. I never really liked Daschle. I thought he was a weakling, as shown by his tenure in the Senate.

Glad to hear it. Nor do I.

Wasn't his main draw working on the Socialized/Nationalized health care system?

I agree. I was very happy when he was knocked out of the Senate (in 04, I believe)

That's why I wasn't a fan of his.

Not being a fan of S/NHCS I am happy about this, but I wonder how this effects this program for him now. I do not know if there are any other big wigs that can move this project along like he could.

At least he's acknowledging it. I wasn't happy with him upon hearing it and I'm glad he is owning up to it. Now, we must see if he changes his approach.

^I was also impressed Obama stuck to his word and said when he makes a mistake he will acknowledge and do something to fix the situation. That has been the headline of the evening.

I'm not saying he's totally redeemed, but yes, I just wanted to make that point.

I agree that President Obama messed up and I am also happy to see that he acknowledged his mistake. It's important to have a president that is willing to do that. Now let's move on and try to resolve the many issues this country is facing.

He admitted this mistake because it was the politically convenient thing to do. Geithner is another tax cheat and Obama should have yanked his nomination.

Glad to read this especially after your other post.

I agree that Geithner should not have been appointed, considering that he had all these tax problems and has a questionable track record at the NY Fed. However, I am not sure who I would have gone with instead.

I was not sold on Daschle, especially since he has lobbied in the past for medical insurance companies that he would need to deal with in order to get a Universal Healthcare proposal to work. It was also pretty telling that he lost his reelection bid when he was still Senate Minority Leader (although it looks like Harry Reid is going to have a rough reelection fight in 2010). Some have been suggesting Howard Dean, who is an actual medical doctor, and had success as Governor of Vermont with a well-liked UHC program that he created there.

I did think it was dumb though that the woman nominated for the new position of Chief Performance Officer withdrew her nomination because she recently discovered that she owed $979 in back taxes. That should not derail a nomination, IMO. The kind of tax money that Daschle had not paid is another story.

It was hilarious that at the end of last night's The Daily Show, they played a 1985 TV ad of Tom Daschle for Senate, where he is shown to be still driving this old rickety car that he has had since college to Washington. They were using that as a reason to vote for the guy.
