Yes, it's still early (not that early though) but so far this season we're OPSing .714 with an OPS+ of 86.

The OPS+ of 86 is tied for 2nd worst in franchise history with 1998. The worst was 1993 when the OPS+ was 74.

So far we've gotten better than MLB average production out of C, 1B and SS. We're a bit behind in LF and 2B but I wouldn't worry abou them. Hermida should be able to stay close to the average and Uggla should eventually blow past the average based on his history. Cody is a bit of a concern but he has put up good numbers in the past so I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point. Maybe a couple of weeks from now if he's still struggling then worry. The problems are 3B and CF. I think Boni has basically done what was excpected of him. Maybin hardly ever hits the ball hard and looks overmatched. Something needs to change. I don't think Maybin is going anywhere so I think they need to do something with 3B. It's unfair to bench a guy for doing what was expected of him but this is the case with Boni. The options on the bench (Fredo, Helms and Gload) are not particulalry appealing if you're looking for more offense. They need to call-up Gabby Sanchez.

2009 OPS by Position

Marlins / MLB Average / Difference

=====================

C - .896 / .738 / +.158

1B - .975 / .850 / +.125

2B - .719 / .767 / -.048

SS - .793 / .681 / +.112

3B - .583 / .768 / -.185

LF - .791 / .808 / -.017

CF - .548 / .772 / -.224

RF - .635 / .785 / -.150

As a unit, our offense is 12th in the Majors with 122 runs scored which is pretty good considering we are 27th in BA (.243), 18th in HR (25), 22nd in 2B (38), 23rd in OBP (.325), 26th in SLG (.388) and 24th in OPS (.714).

Somehow we are still scoring runs and have 14 wins, although not too many wins of late.

Hanley, Uggla, Hermida and Ross have all yet to get things going and once they reach normal production then things should be set up nicely for the team.

I purposely didnt include Maybin in the names above. I expect him to contribute to a decent enough level during the season but it is far less of a sure thing than the more experienced players I mentioned.

We're 12th in the NL is OPS and the correlation between OPS and runs scored is so strong that if we stay 12th in OPS by the end of the year you can be very certain we'll be between 10th and 14th in runs scored and that wont get it done.

LOL...who was it that jumped on me for saying this offense wasn't very good?

The same offense, basically, from last year with improvements, at certain positions?

If you ask me, all you are is knee-jerky, at the moment.

One of these days, Uggla will sting the ball and not get robbed, and Maybin is going to improve and that will take care of our OPS.

He's (Maybin) has been mashing the ball lately. Just can't find a hole.

This is pretty much exactly what I expected. While we have most of the pieces of last years succesful offense, we stripped off all of our depth and have two clear downgrades in our lineup in comparison to last year. Whats worse is that we've put ourselves in a situation to where we really don't have reasonable players to step in to fix the holes either.

Where are the downgrades?

3B and CF.

Ok.

We've seen a massive upgrade at C and 1B. SS and 2B will be there. I think CF will get to at close to average eventually.

CF isn't a downgrade.

We had a utility guy out there the 1st couple of months of the season, last year.

we took 45 homers and 130 or so RBIs out of our lineup and replaced it with Emilio Bonfacio and Cameron Maybin. Now I didnt expect us to put up gaudy numbers like we did last year. In 2003 we werent exactly an offensive juggernaut either.

What I was a looking for was a better situational hitting team and a cutdown on the strikeouts. Neither of those have happened so far. We may have improved slightly at situational hitting and our K rate is again worst in the majors. And for those saying not to worry about the offense or Uggla getting off to a slow start I think ur missing the point. We dont have a stellar bullpen, and our starting rotation is not as strong as thought so far (namely cuz of Nolasco and our lack of a legit 5th starter) so we do need as much from the offense as possible.

What it looks like to me is we are the same offense as last year, meaning that we need home runs to score because we dont manufacture runs. And if we need homeruns to score and we traded away Jacobs and Willingham then we are kind of screwed. We could manufacture runs better but we dont seem like were able to do that consistently as of now. and truthfully we wont be able to do that with a team batting average under 250.

who gives a crap ?? We're 15-11 and in 1st place. Frankly, our bad offensive numbers makes this 15-11 record look even more impressive. GO MARLINS !

I do because although we're scoring 4.8 runs per game so far this season (which is good) that number will undoubtedly come down by a lot if our OPS stays where it is. In simpler terms.. if we keep hitting like we're hitting we're screwed.

Maybin has looked lost at the plate. He looks at the good pitches and swings at the crappy ones or swings through the good ones. It's like he makes his mind up before the pitch. It's fine to look for a certain pitch but be ready for the fastball.

Boner hasn't exactly been great either but at least he puts the ball in play more than maybin and he seems to have made an adjustment to the high fastball. Also we got Gaby if boner goes completly south for another long period of time. j

You've narrowed the problem down to two rookies, and the solution is to replace them with another one?

Not that I disagree about calling up Gaby mind you, but I doubt he'll have immediate success either. Maybin and Bonifacio are basically rookies, early struggles are not unexpected.

It's highly unlikely that Uggla and Ross continue like this. It'll turn around soon.

That's not very likely though

Just because two rookies have struggled doesn't mean a third would.

Gaby has put up better numbers in the minors than Boni or Maybin. Last year he was Maybin's teammate and outhit him by a wide margin.

If the roster and lineup stays as it is now my prediction is our OPS would increase about .030 which would put us about 8th in OPS. Basically the same as the NL average. Not good enough. There should be improvements in 2B, SS and RF partailly offset by decreased production in Catcher and 1B. 3B likely would remain where it is now and CF would probably go up to the mid .600s because Maybin is enough of an athlete that he can't be this bad.

CF isn't a downgrade.

Marlins 2008 CF OPS - .750

Marlins 2009 CF OPS - .547
