Posted June 8, 200915 yr In honor of the MLB first player draft coming up on Tuesday, who in your opinion is the best player the Marlins have drafted that's played in the Majors? The Marlins have had some great drafts and some not so great draft picks over the years. Looking back over the draft lists I would rate the Marlins 2002 draft as their best as they took in the several players that have spent time in the Show including Hermida, Andino, JJ, Olsen, Eric Reed, Ross Wolf, a player they traded Travis Chick and their #5 pick they failed to sign Nick Hundley. If and when Tim Wood pitches in the majors he would join the 02 list and would also be the lowest player drafted (44th round)and signed by the Marlins to play. The 2005 draft stands to be a great one too as they took Volstad, Tucker and West, but also took Gaby and Leroux and oh yeah, if he makes it Logan Morrison. Remember the player has to have played in the Majors, not necessarily for the Marlins
June 8, 200915 yr I was thinking the other day how awesome it would of been to have taken NOMAR instead of Josh Booty in 94.
June 8, 200915 yr Johan Santana - Rule 5 draft Even thou he was instantly traded to the Twins for Jared Camp
June 8, 200915 yr 5. Josh Booty, SS, FLA, 4/29/75, 6'3, 220, R/R, Evangel Christian High School(Shreveport, LA) should of went 5. Nomar Garciaparra, SS, FLA, 7/23/73, 6'0, 175, R/R, Georgia Tech
June 8, 200915 yr Beckett. Why is Hermida an option? Because he has a .362 OBP right now as a 25-year-old.
June 8, 200915 yr Beckett. Why is Hermida an option? Because he has a .362 OBP right now as a 25-year-old. Your point? He's had one good year in his career, and that makes him one of the best draft picks by the Marlins ever?
June 8, 200915 yr A case could be made that Hermida is one of the highest touted Marlins prospects ever pre-debut. Alot of that has to do with the love fest fellow Georgia boy Jeff Francoeur was getting leading up to Hermida's debut. BTW, I had forgotten the Marlins drafted Randy Winn.
June 8, 200915 yr Yes, Hermida is the all-time best without a doubt. :notworthy He's also an amazing outfielder.
June 8, 200915 yr I know this thread doesn't specify by first round selections, but out of curiosity I did a little research on past first round picks made by the Marlins. I always knew the Marlins werent so great at making good first round picks, but after this research, I'm convinced that they've been absolutely horrible at it. It's pretty surprising, considering they have been known for their scouting department. The only real superstars they have drafted in the first round are Beckett and Adrian Gonzalez. Here's a rundown... 1992- Charles Johnson- Good pick to build an organization from the ground up with, had a couple good years, two time All-Star, 4-time Gold Glover. Career ultimately cut short, but solid selection. 1993- Marc Valdes- Not much of anything. Short career. Had one decent year with Montreal. 1994- Josh Booty- Nothing 1995- Jaime Jones- Nothing 1996- Mark Kotsay- Decent player. Able to keep major league jobs, but nothing extraordinary. 1997- Aaron Akin- Nilch 1998- Chip Ambres- Nada 1999- Josh Beckett- Stud 2000- Adrian Gonzalez- Stud 2001- No first-round pick that year 2002- Jeremy Hermida- Decent so far, has potential 2003- Jeff Allison- Crackhead, could have been outstanding, still has a glimmer of hope 2004- Taylor Tankersley- Meh 2005- Chris Volstad- Rising star, could be one of the better pitchers in the league, an overall great selection/Aaron Thompson- Meh, decent prospect/ Jacob Marceax- Not Much 2006- Brett Sinkbeil- Eh 2007- Matt Dominguez- Too early to tell 2008- Kyle Skipworth- Too early to tell
June 8, 200915 yr I was thinking the other day how awesome it would of been to have taken NOMAR instead of Josh Booty in 94. Yeah what a serious mistake that was!!! Booty will probably go down as one of our worst 1st picks ever... If not the worst.
June 8, 200915 yr 2003- Jeff Allison- Crackhead, could have been outstanding, still has a glimmer of hope hahaha poor Jeff... But wasn't he hooked on Meth? I think it was Meth not Crack.
June 8, 200915 yr I'd have to say Beckett. He's been hit or miss sometimes in the regular season but he has been a world series MVP and won another world series. The guy is a winner. Adrian Gonzalez is moving up but there is something special about a frontline pitcher. JJ could be there and I actually think he is a better pitcher right now, but in evaluating their careers you have to say that Beckett was the best so far.
June 8, 200915 yr 5. Josh Booty, SS, FLA, 4/29/75, 6'3, 220, R/R, Evangel Christian High School(Shreveport, LA) should of went 5. Nomar Garciaparra, SS, FLA, 7/23/73, 6'0, 175, R/R, Georgia Tech 1. Paul Wilson 2. Ben Grieve 3. Dustin Hermanson 4. Antone Williamson Not a lot of good work there.
