Should we belive the news on this one, or is this a scare tactic.

They can't actually hit Hawaii. They can get close, but the missile's maximum range is too short. Plus, the North Koreans' missiles aren't very reliable.

I am sure the islanders are shaking in their ostentatious floral shirts.

Their Taepodong-2 missile is actually an ICBM that is capable of reaching San Francisco. Its range is estimated at 4-9,000 km. However, the maximum of this range would require a top payload of only 500 kg.

The furthest its gone, during the alleged "satellite launch" earlier this year, is 3,850 km. It would have to go at least 7,100 km to reach Honolulu, but only 5,500 km to reach Anchorage (it varies, they use mobile launchers). Its max theoretical range is barely enough to reach San Francisco and not enough to reach L.A.

(As an aside, I can't help but wonder how the pacifists on the left coast would feel if North Korea did nuke San Francisco. Would they turn on Obama, or just blame Bush?)

It's highly unlikely they'd be able to get many off if it actually does try to nuke anything. It probably wouldn't take too long for us to pick off all their systems.

Why does everything automatically have to turn into blame?

“Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.

Biden isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but this is an interesting quote from the campaign in retrospect.

Just like they blamed FDR.

Also, no pacifists on the West Coast? I bet they'd be a tad angry too.

And by pacifists, do you mean people who don't want to go to war with North Korea? If so, you got a lot more than the coasts to cover.

I don't see any great insight here by Biden. It's fact. It's the norm for any new POTUS to be tested. To me at least, this is not "an interesting quote from the campaign in retrospect".

Maybe true, but he was getting pilloried for it as another example of a "Biden gaffe". All the while Mark Sanford was trying to solve a problem like Maria.

Oh, that's a good one. lol

Maria and Mark's Excellent Adventure trip.

What is Obama supposed to do right now? You couldn't pay me enough to do that job... I mean, talk about walking on eggshells.

Again, as I said earlier, I think he generally made the right decision (in that he is not following the suggestions of the neo-conservatives). Either Obama should have said nothing at all (perhaps wise) or Ahmadinejad is just hard to please. Most of the stated rhetoric expressed by Obama preceding the Iranian elections was comparable to Bush's positions.

However, I think a large part of the problem is that we have CIA agents in Iran right now both funding and assisting the revolutionaries. I don't agree with these actions and I'm certain that Ahmadinejad is aware that Obama has the power to end it.

I have zero issues on how Obama handled this situation.

I'm actually glad that this nutjob is demanding an appology. Any type of talks with Iran is a waste of time
