Posted July 26, 200915 yr According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers and Indians are in serious discussions about a trade that would send Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez to the Dodgers for a package including either Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley. James Loney would also be involved, which makes sense because Martinez would play first base most of the time in L.A. We imagine that the Indians would prefer Kershaw, who will be a lot cheaper than Billingsley over the next few years. It's certainly be a fascinating trade if it gets done. Not sure if I would like this too much if I was a Dodgers fan based on the fact they would be losing either Kershaw or Billingsley. Yeh Lee won the Cy Young last year and is pitching well again in 09 despite a poor W-L record, but Kershaw is incredibly young and shown he can dominate in the Majors, and similarly Billingsley is a fantastic strikeout guy.
July 26, 200915 yr A Dodgers executive said today that there is “less than zero truth to rumored discussions that had the team sending a package centered on first baseman James Loney to Cleveland in exchange for left-hander Cliff Lee and first baseman-catcher Victor Martinez. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/07/no-truth-to-loney-rumors.html
July 26, 200915 yr The move would make no sense based on the fact it doesn't significantly upgrade them in any way... they'd replace an all-star (or future all-star) pitcher with last year's Cy Young winner and a competent 1B for a 1B/C... Oh trade deadline, how I love thee
July 27, 200915 yr This trade makes no sense. Usually a trade happens because each team are able to fill a different need - in this scenario they would essentially be swapping players in the same positions and either team would not really be upgrading significantly. It won't happen.
