I was just seeing the list of non-tendered players after last night's deadline. There is a few who could raise some interest to the Marlins according to positions where we don't look to be set yet. Garret Atkins, Jake Cust, Johnny Gomes, Ryan Church, etc?

On the pitching side MacDougal and Capps seem to be pitching for different franchises come 2010. I think Capps was involved in trade talks with the Fish prior to 07/31/2009 trading deadline, so he's been under our radar.

We have a reputation as a place where veteran relief pitchers come and have very good years. The possibility of adding either or both would make our bullpen real strong; however, when it comes to the Florida Marlins budget is always a big issue.

What do you think guys? Who coud fit the bill?

Do you see any of the non-tendered signing with the Marlins?

Thoughts?

I saw where Kelly Johnson was non-tendered by the Braves. He's coming off a bad year (in which he was hurt), and has declined since his solid 2007 season. I'd still probably rather see him playing 2B than Bonifacio (assuming Uggla gets traded). Not sure how much a guy like Johnson would cost us, but I think we should at least consider him.

MacDougal was under our new pitching coach's (St. Claire) tutelage last season, at least for a short while (two appearances only). It's hard to draw any conclusions though about linking the two. MacDougal's +walks to strikeout totals has to be a negative when considering him.

MacDougal is horrible. He never has any control.

Someone will overpay for Matt Capps. I don't see the Marlins getting him. Same for Ryan Church.

However, Garret Atkins or Kelly Johnson are both intriguing ideas. I'd prefer to keep Uggla, obviously, but its not going to happen.

If anyone is going to be playing 2B not named Dan Uggla, it better be Chris Coghlan....

I think Kelly Johnson would be great if you think you can fix him. You could play him at 2B/3B/LF, and is a lefty.

And, I mean all of those guys would be good in their own way. The question is going to come too, who wants to play for $1 million or lower because they can't get a deal anywhere else, and are they going to be content fighting with Gaby, Jimenez, Bonifacio, and Carroll for playing time at some position.

Really not a fan of Garrett Atkins. He only put up a .811 career OPS in Coors with a career .735 OPS away from there. And basically all metrics say he's a real bad defensive 3b.

I mean, could you do worse? Yeah. But lot of other options that are likely going to be better.

i think he'd be intriguing especially if uggla gets traded. we can put coghlan back into natural infield position if we sign kelly and he gets his swing back

2B - Coghlan

CF - Maybin

SS - Hanley

3B - Cantu

C - Baker

RF - Ross

1B - Morrison

LF - Kelly Johnson

also i believe morrison has played left field as well. so if you're worried about cantu's defense at 3rd you can play morrison in left, kelly at 3rd, and then cantu at 1st base

I wouldn't be opposed to having Bonifacio serving as utility players then having a guy like Kelly Johnson with utility capabilities in a full time role. I live near Atl. and go see the Braves play very frequently. I like Kelly a lot. If he's available for the right price, i say go for him.

I've always though Kelly Johnson was a little attractive although I'd like to see him out of a Braves uniform.

Oh wait, what were we talking about again?

Who knows how much comfort of hitting in the ballpark you're used to comes into play. Cantu OPS'd .123 lower on the road than at home last season. Cody's OPS dipped .060 on the road. Uggla OPS'd .158 lower on the road. Even Hanley OPS'd .064 lower on the road. Coghlan is the anomoly of the group, who OPS'd .149 higher on the road than at home, which doesn't bode well for next season if he reverts to the general trend of OPS'ing lower on the road than his .774 at home.

Atkins had a very rough year last year, but his 2007 season was very good. I'd be willing to take a chance he turns it around from last year.

I would love to get Church and Capps. IDK why, but I've always liked them as players.

I just read somewhere, I think MLBTR that there's a rumor the Red Sox have told Hermida he could be traded if they re-sign Bay. The source wondered if the Cameron deal was enough to trigger such a move.

if they resign jason bay i don't see hermida as the first outfielder to be traded. i think it's more likely that the red sox try to package buccholz and ellsbury in a trade for a 1st baseman like adrian gonzalez.

i disagree, i think its bucholz and hermida to SD for Gonzo in that scenario, but IDK what they would do with Max Ramirez, Victor Martinez, David Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez in that situation.

2 Catcher, who can play 1B better then C, and a All star 1B to split time with Victor Martinez.

Too convuluted.

I don't know if you wanna trade away Elsbury's GG defense in CF and premier lead-off bat to put Cameron who is about 102 years old out in CF

You aren't. You're trading away Elsbury's GG defense in CF and premier lead-off bat to put Cameron who is about 102 years old out in CF and Adrian Gonzalez who is 27 years old, a two-time GG defender, costing $25K over the next 3 years, and premier #3 hitter at 1B.

Oops! Wrong thread.

i doubt the padres would have any interest in hermida. also ellsbury is not a GG outfielder, his defense is actually not that impressive

another name that intrigues me is rocco baldelli. he's a free agent and if we gave him a minor league deal we could see if he can contribute during spring training. he did okay last season with the red sox even with limited playing time.

I don't think bringing in a guy like Baldelli is a bad thing. I also wouldn't mind the Marlins adding a guy like Frank Catalanotto to the bench either.

Baldelli has a fatigue disease that prevents him from playing for long periods of time. So its not really a low risk/high reward thing. Kind of like a low risk/medium reward. But I wouldnt mind him platooning with Carroll in the OF.

It's hard to platoon two righty hitters.
