Posted December 19, 200915 yr When we trade Uggla, is there any chance we get back an OF prospect back to play in LF or is the FO only looking for pitching depth? I know Stanton is coming soon but next season our options are kinda limited right now for LF, assuming Coglan moves to 2B.
December 19, 200915 yr WTF - please change this title. Scared the crap outta me. As for the post - not sure what the FO is thinking, but pitching depth is the proper way to go IMO. You have to think longterm, where we have fine depth at 1B/OF. If you look through some old threads, this question has been addressed previously in some depth.
December 19, 200915 yr They should get all pitching. Minors is loaded with Maybin, Stanton, Petersen, and Cousins. For 2010, Carroll/Coghlan/Veteran Bat should hold down the fort. Pitching Pitching and more Pitching.

Agree 100%, and if we can't get that, I would tell the FO to hold onto Uggla until the deadline, were he could possibly be even more valuable if he has a strong 1st half.
December 20, 200915 yr The Marlins need pitching more than anything right now. West, Volstad, and Miller didn't exactly stun the world last year. West and Volstad are still inexperienced but if Miller has a 5.00+ ERA by the All-Star break in 2010, I'm giving up on him being a starter with this organization. Josh Johnson might be walking and Ricky Nolasco is inconsistent. Anibal Sanchez will likely never be consistently healthy again. Around 2012 the Marlins will have a nice lineup consisting of Stanton, Morrison, Coghlan, Ramirez, Maybin, etc. but the pitching staff is still going to be a huge question mark. The Marlins need to start acquiring arms that can contribute around that timeframe.
December 20, 200915 yr they should definitely get a good pitcher in return for uggla and then work other players around that pitcher. why not give morrison a shot in left field if he performs well during spring training and allow coghlan to move back to his more natural position at 2nd base.
December 20, 200915 yr How about instead of trading Dan Uggla, we trade Gaby Sanchez for a top 10 organization pitching prospect.Since some of you want pitching so bad, that you'd sacrifice our offense, and the great power second baseman that is Dan Uggla.

Boy, we love to overrate our prospects here. There is not one team in baseball that would give you a top 10 pitcher for Sanchez, period.

Well, he said top 10 organization pitching prospect, not top 10 overall. And to be fair, it doesn't take much of a pitcher to break into our top-10. We are very very top heavy at the moment, after Dominguez/Logan/Stanton not much is impressive. A good C+ SP is in our top 10

Gaby alone wouldn't bring us much in return. I would have to agree with that. Think Jake without the big league experience. But I would say he did overrate Gaby himself. He's not a prospect. Quite bluntly, at best he is a fill in until the prospect is ready.
December 20, 200915 yr Marlins do not need anymore Outfielders with Morrison Peterson and Cousins working their way up I am really surprised with Peterson he has become a very strong Prospect. As soon as Stanton is brought up Cody will likely move to LF as well

December 20, 200915 yr Honestly, I've pretty much given up on him already. I just want to keep an open mind.
December 21, 200915 yr if a deal with the giants goes down i wouldn't mind if we got fred lewis in return as long as some good pitching prospects accompanied him. he'd be a nice 4th outfielder who hits from the left side and he seems to have fallen out of bochey's good graces. what are good pitching prospects the giants have and would realistically give up?

Cool, so you want a 4th OF and some pitching for a 30HR second baseman? Personally, I think Ugglas worth a decent SP Prospect, and maybe a few throw in prospects. If Beinfest can pull it off, package Miller and Uggla for a Can't miss prospect and a high ceiling but high risk prospect.

December 22, 200915 yr I really like seeing people love/hate on Gaby. I mean, it's clearly in the middle of what everyone thinks. Is he valuable in a trade to get us a young SP or value? No. Is he worthless? No. He still projects to be a decent bat and makes a lot of contact. He's just worth more to us. He's just not a guy you trade. And LOL at the constant let's keep Uggla and trade Gaby remarks from Retro. Let's just ignore the $7 million in difference, the positions, and that Dan WILL get a nice young pitcher eventually because he's one of the better 2B around and will be the top power hitter around once Bay and Holliday sign. If you want to keep Uggla at a $40 million salary, the price is trading Cantu and Anibal for younger pitching, and roll out this R Maybin CF L Coghlan 3B/LF R Hanley SS R Uggla 2B L Baker C R Ross LF/RF then your playing time competition at the two remaining starting spots. R G. Sanchez 1B L Jimenez 3B R Carroll LF/RF S Bonifacio 3B/LF X Veteran 1B/3B/LF type And your 12th and 13th players are Paulino and Helms. (And for the record, I hate this team based on Coghlan is prevented from getting to 2B. Which is a HUGE need for this organization for him to play there for hopefully a decade.) If that doesn't work, try Morrison and Petersen in June once their arb clock passes. I'm fine either way, but under the assumption that payroll is under $40, can't keep all these guys Retro no matter how much you keep typing it.

Just don't see what everyone else has been "seeing" by looking at his accomplishments in A and AA. Not at this level. Or in ST. Or in Winter Ball. I simply see him as more of a Mike Jacobs without the ML experience. Not alot of glove and very streaky bat. And like I have pointed out before, by the ways he has been used during call ups apparently the coaching staff and FO is seeing the same things. I see it pointless to look at something right in front of me and say it dosen't exist just because I don't want it to. I would agree that he's not a guy you trade. At least not on his own. Wouldn't bring much back in value. But combining him in a trade might be the tipping point for some teams.

Wouldn't bring much back in value. But combining him in a trade might be the tipping point for some teams. Huh? He had awesome numbers throughout his entire minor league career. His only weak stint was the "abysmal" season in Jupiter where he "only" put up an .800 OPS. If you are going to be a skeptic with regard to his talent, you can't make much of a case upon observing his minor league performance. So then you try to knock the guy based upon 29 ML at bats over two seasons that were given inconsistently through pinch hitting roles. That's absurd. So all that leaves is his performance in spring training and winter leagues. No sane person would knock his accomplishments largely on those two factors. I don't think Sanchez is going to become something that spectacular but he will outperform Bonifacio if given the chance. It's clear that you are just stubborn about this whole matter and are desperately trying to find faults. Remember that you said earlier that you expected that Sanchez would be traded before Opening Day. That is an indication of how deep you have your head in sand.
