Bench players Brian Barden and Mike Lamb got the good news this morning that -- barring injuries, trades or lightning strikes -- they had made the club. No huge surprises. But the roster is now all but officially set, save for the Cody Ross situation, as the Marlins prepare to break camp and head north.

We just finished talking with Ross, who will not play again today due to his calf injury but remains cautiously optimistic that he can still get ready in time to be with the club on Opening Day.

"We're going to take it day by day," Ross said. "It's not (Opening Day) ruled out. But it's getting close to making a decision. I'm just going to keep in close contact with Fredi (Gonzalez) and Mike (Hill) and Admin (Beinfest) and make sure I'm smart about it, and not try to be a hero. It's either four games that I miss, or it could turn into an eight-week process if I go out there and re-aggravate it.

"I feel good about it. I'm optimistic. I'm not ruling anything out. I don't think they are either. Obivously I want to be there. I want to play and help the team. But I want to be smart about it."

Saturday is the deadline for the Marlins to turn in their 25-man roster.

Meanwhile, the Marlins made their final cuts Thursday before taking the field for their final Grapefruit League game.

Outfielder Bryan Petersen was reassigned to Triple A New Orleans. Infielders Hector Luna and Donnie Murphy were also packing their bags.

Marlins moves before last ST game

So Boni starts if Ross cant go opening day?? :confused :thumbdown

April Fools, right?

ok the lamb part i understand he did well...barden did well also but i cannot stand when the team gets a hard on for some guy who has done nothing.....why do we need barden and bonifacio.... two small guys with no power and only hit well in spring training.

i would have prefered luna make the team....hes versatile and a much more proven hitter than barden.

We REALLY need Cody to be healthy as we face the Mets, Dodgers and Phillies in the first 2 weeks of the season. All are tough, crunch series and we need to make sure we have all our top players available for a good start.

Key point is a healthy Cody Ross. Do NOT rush him so he's gimpy all year.

Were Luna and Muprhy released or were they reassigned to NOLA? The article says "Infielders Hector Luna and Donnie Murphy were also packing their bags" after saying that Petersen was reassigned. That to me implies that that they were reassigned, not released, and at which point we're arguing about assumptions.

Does anyone have any hard fact of what happened to the two? I have to imagine if they were released then they had opt out clauses, which Luna MIGHT but very unlikely for Murphy.

I guess I'm in the minority but Cody ought not rush back nor should the team allow him to because the last thing it needs is Ross hitting .132 for the first five games and maybe re-injuring himself in the process. With his history of problems better he gets in shape and gets his hitting eye back. If we can't get past the Mets without Ross we are in serious trouble anyways.

Bryan Petersen is being reassigned to Minor League camp.

Non-roster invitees Hector Luna and Donnie Murphy didn't make the team.
