Posted April 26, 201014 yr Thank God the Baseball Union put pressure on the Marlins to spend money in 2010. Where would the Marlins be without Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla this season? They have 27 runs scored, 8 homers and 31 RBIs between them already this season. So much for some of the guys/gals on here that thought they would be easy to replace and you know who you are. Chris Coghlan at 2B instead of Uggla? LOL.

April 26, 201014 yr Cantu was almost certainly going to stay for 2010 anyway. They did try to trade Uggla at the Meetings however once they couldnt find a partner he was here for this season. I think too much was made about the Union comments, as similarly JJ was already in contract negotiations.

If Stanton continues to kill it in the minors it be nice if we could trade some one for bull pen help or starting pitching and bring up Stanton. Of Uggla, Gaby, Cantu, and Cody who would be most likely to be traded at the deadline?
April 26, 201014 yr Cody. Get hot baby !!! We need the trade bait. (and BTW I'm a Cody fan.) I could see this, but I honestly would hate to see that because our bad defense would get even worse. If the FO thinks CC can play 3rd or 2nd, then I could see it being Uggla or Cantu also. I think Cantu is easily the most overrated player of the group (I'm sure I'll get flamed for this), so I guess I'd prefer him if the FO sees CC as at least providing similar defense to Cantu (and assuming his bat gets going again, of course).
April 27, 201014 yr I think this team could easily have sustained losing Uggla or Cantu, using Coghlan in the infield, and Carroll/Petersen/Whoever in the outfield (with in a best case scenario Morrison or Stanton taking over at some point). With the added knowledge the team would have at least another reliever or starting pitcher as a result. Would really not be a big deal despite Cantu and Uggla playing really well. Also, SAMPLE SIZE. Coghlan and Maybin are going to hit more as the season goes along. Offense is not the problem which I have been saying for months. It's the pitching, and we really need some arms to show up besides Johnson, Nolasco, Nunez, and Badenhop. I'm optimistic but another big arm anywhere would do wonders.
April 27, 201014 yr Author You hope Coghlan and Maybin will hit more as the season goes on. Neither of these guys have a proven track record of producing at the major league level. It could be that pitchers have figured Coghlan out. You seem to believe in the myth that prospects always plug in and do better than proven veterans. That logic is way off Lou. Uggla and Cantu are proven players at the major league level and they would not be easily replaced. It's just like when Rays' fans are thinking that Desmond Jennings will replace Carl Crawford next season without the team missing a beat and they are likely wrong on that one.
April 27, 201014 yr Thank God for the baseball union Holy crap. Are you crazy? The "baseball union" is why fans in general pay $4 for a hot dog, $8 for a beer, $10 to park and $30 or more for a decent seat. No union (which is always and can never be anything other than a restraint on the free market, no matter the circumstances) has ever done any good for anyone who wasn't a member of it. Last time I checked, no one here is a member of the MLBPA. It would be funny if it weren't so sad that anyone here would think that an organization that is dedicated to corrupting the free market in baseball players should be thanked for causing MLB owners to have to charge prices high enough to cover their MLBPA-extorted costs, which are much higher than they would otherwise be. I have no problem with free agency, I applaud it, but, guess what? Nobody needs a damn union for free agency, that's the free market at work in a pure state. You're worth what someone is willing to pay you. Period. The stupid union serves only to inflate the salaries of everyone else. The bunches of guys on most teams being paid $400K when they're worth about 10% of that. That's HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS every year in costs being fobbed off on fans. Never mind the pension costs, etc., etc, etc. Not to mention that the MLBPA had nothing to do with the Marlins current payroll.

It's just like when Rays' fans are thinking that Desmond Jennings will replace Carl Crawford next season without the team missing a beat and they are likely wrong on that one. That's not what I'm thinking at all. It was never replacing exactly what Uggla could produce. You combine Uggla, Hermida, Bonifacio, and N. Johnson, and it comes out to around a .740 OPS that is below average defensively. I maintain, G. Sanchez, Maybin, Carroll, and others (which include any minor leaguer such as Morrison, Stanton, or Petersen, or any trade candidate at the break) can replace that level of production on the team. And as a result, you cash in Uggla for a BIG pitcher that helps right now (and additional prospects), plus the ability to use use the payroll to keep Lindstrom (1.22 whip, 1/10 BB/K) and sign a real bench guy over Lamb. All of those things are equally as useful as Uggla. That team is better than our current team despite Uggla being an excellent ball player. It's why the Marlins tried to trade him. Yea, they couldn't get their deal so they kept him which also isn't a bad scenario and I'm not complaining at all because I'm glad they didn't tank it with a Abercrombie/Borchard/etc option like they have in the past, but your assertion this franchise would be screwed without Uggla or Cantu is simply false. They would be just fine and the season would still come down to Volstad, Anibal, Robertson, Miller, West, Vanden Hurk, or whoever else, throwing consistent innings behind the 1-2. Not a big deal. And I've always maintained Coghlan over achieved last year and was coming down a solid 50+ OPS points to the .775-.800 range. This slump is a bit much, but we all knew that drop was coming. Maybin had a .775 OPS three days ago and has had 3 bad games, and a small injury in between. He clearly is a loser with this sample size. Yea he whiffs a bit, but give him time. He's going to figure it out. Maybe he doesn't turn into Beltran, but there's no reason to think he can't be Mike Cameron and produce .260/.350/.450+ lines with excellent defense (which has been pretty good since the Mets flyballs) and speed. He's adjusting to MLB pitchers. Relax.
