November 18, 200322 yr I would., because I find no strategic advantage in giving him a free pass. Of the plate appearances he's been pitched to (PA-IBB) Bonds only hits a home run once in every single 11 PA, drives a single run every single 6 PA, and still reaches base less than half the time. He's not that bring of a threat, and the odds are in the pitcher's favor of coming away with an out. So why give him and the Giants a free man on base? No reason. It's just as much frustrating for a pitcher to worry about Bonds than it is to stand up and pitch to him and occassionaly get beaten by the best of the game and just move on to the next batter.
November 18, 200322 yr I think the IBB is way overused but it does have some strategic advantage. If there are 2 outs, and your choice is pitching to the guy that hits a HR once every 11 PA or the guy that hits a HR once every 30 PA, your odds are probably better with the second guy. Overall, I hate the IBB, especially walking the #8 batter to get to the pitcher. In a lot of cases the #8 hitter is batting 8th for a reason - he sucks. I'd much rather go after the #8 batter and get the pitcher leading off the next inning. Bill James did some research a couple of years ago on what the effect would be if OF #25 was walked every time up. James ran a bunch of simulations and he found that it would create many more runs by walking Bonds than it would by pitching to him.
