Brad Davis and send down Brett Hayes. Davis seems to have a better bat than Hayes. I don't know how he is defensively but Hayes is just taking up a roster spot. I realize that Paulino has been more than average this year but eventually these constant starts will tire him out. Thoughts?

Brad Davis isn't having a bad year but is nothing special, and when it comes down to it Brett Hayes is on the 40-man roster and Davis isn't. There's just no reason to muddy the 40-man up for a guy who probably isn't going to be that much better than Hayes, if at all.

BTW, Hayes is supposed to be pretty good defensively. Just like Matt Treanor's first couple stints with us were when other guys were on the DL, all we're hoping for in his spot starts is good defense and good game calling. Having Hayes on the bench seems worse than it should be because some of the other guys on the bench should be providing offensive contributions, but aren't, so it feels like we should have a guy with a bat in his place. Nevertheless, Davis doesn't have bad numbers in AAA but they're not even as good as what some of the current invisibles on the bench have done down there, so you can imagine how his bat would likely translate and why the transaction just isn't worthwhile at the moment.

We don't need to be carrying that many catchers on the 40 man roster. Hayes has always been a better prospect than Davis as well. And Baker will be back in 4-6 weeks I believe, so Paulino can rest then.

Actually, it seems worse than it should be because he never plays. We have a platoon catcher now catching every single day. At the end of the day, the team needs John Baker back.

lolololololololololol...I assume you're being facetious.

Ronnie may be a better platoon catcher, but his overall numbers are fine for a catcher regardless. Just because he happens to be much better against lefties doesn't make him inept overall. And his production as a catcher hasn't come close to being one of the things holding this team back.

There are other players like Cody Ross who are dramatically better against left-handed starters. Not every player with strong splits has to be a platoon player, what matters is that they are competent enough versus their weaker split to not be a liability.

Ronny Paulino hasn't been this year, so in the absence of Baker you keep him against righties, where he is still hitting .276, and then if a lefty gets brought in there's a very good chance he'll do some damage.

I know everyone is concerned about Ronny's workload, but there are tons of catcher's around the league who start just as much as him and nobody makes a big deal about them.

And Baker will be back in 4-6 weeks I believe, so Paulino can rest then.

No?

I expect Paulino not to start twenty games in a row when Baker is back, like he is now with Hayes. I think that's a pretty reasonable statement.

Hayes last start was June 4th. I find it doubtful you'd find 1 other catcher in the league who has caught every game during the course of a month. Even the 'star' catchers take off every 6th or 7th day, and that's a heavy workload.

The Marlins should play Hayes more, even if he stinks, just to not completely wear Paulino out. He's a big boy and doing an amazing job this year, but you're asking for a lot with literally no off days. Giving Hayes 4 starts a month isn't making this team any worse, and it would be good for Paulino just to stretch out his knees. That's all I'm saying.

I think he was taking you to mean (hoping) that Paulino would be playing non-stop until then.

I didn't realize its been that long- obviously I've had a lot more offdays (watching) than Paulino has. That is excessive.

I didn't know it was that long either. Granted they have had some off days in the mix, but he's had the last 25 starts or so. Pretty insane.

It really tells you what they think of Hayes. This team is going to need to get a better "3rd string" catcher next year (if not now) if they have no confidence in Hayes to do the job. I mean, these guys played Paul Hoover.

On top of that, Matt Treanor was our backup catcher and even pretty much our primary catcher for a while. And though he was pretty good defensively, he was so woeful with the bat that it's hard not to match that (ironically Matt has actually turned into a respectable hitter this year, I don't know how).

This whole situation reeks of the desperation in the organization that the throw crap on the wall and see what sticks approach resulted in absolutely nothing this year (outside of Hensley).

I like the idea of Baker off the bench, Paulino is our clear cut starter from now on. Baker is an upgrade over Hayes/Barden.

Nah when they're both healthy there's no reason not to platoon them, plus it keeps them both fresh. Especially against RHP Baker is the only lefty after Cogs that we've got. Hopefully soon enough Morrison will join that group and we'll have a real nice trio of lefties in the lineup.
