What was said to Edwin Rodriguez during his interview to manage the Ma

I don't know if it's obvious to you guys, but I'm still a little confused as to what's going on?

1. Did Jeffery Loria and David Samson say, "Alright Edwin, you have until the trade deadline to turn this season around and show some sort of momentum leading into the second half. If not, we're going to start cleaning house. If the latter unfortunately does happen, we're giving you permission to call up players from your former ball club to give them some experience at the major league level before we start making trades." Is that why we've seen so many minor league call ups in the last month? Guys like Bryan Peterson, Bonifacio, Donnie Murphy, Alex Sanabia, etc.

2. Or did they give Rodriguez full control of the team. Did they say "This team is yours for the rest of the season. We're not going to make any trades, but you can call up any players you wish from AAA to bring some competition in and let other players know that no starting job is safe." We've been seeing starts from many different guys. I can't even count how many times our lineup has changed in the last month.

I know we've had some injuries, but all these call-ups cannot solely be based on that factor.

I don't think the FO said they'd be no trades. That would be an empty promise because what happens if they have a deal they can't possibly pass up?

More than likely, if they said anything, they said "We are going to be looking internally and externally for players that can improve this team, maybe in the short-run, if we are in competition, maybe in the long-run. Obviously, the minors are going to be the source tapped the most, since it is the easiest to get players from and we know that talent pool."

The only Zephyr we've brought up that wasn't totally necessary was Donnie. And since Barden wasn't producing anyways (there was the theory that Tosca was basically keeping him up) it was justified. I can't think of anyone who I say about "I don't know why they called [blank] up instead of keeping [blank[, must be Edwin".

I'm just wondering why we've been calling up a lot of players from AAA. Is it basically hinting that trades are going to happen soon?

I can't see how our line up has changed all that much, except to insert players because of injuries. Cogs' hurt back put Boni in, but he was already on the team. Paulino has been getting some much deserved rest, and then Hayes got hurt forcing a Davis call up. Others weren't performing at all and we did the normal things for that. But those were bench players. We got some pen help, but mostly getting guys back that were either coming off injuries or getting their problems worked out. The roster and the transactions list may look like we did alot, but in actuality it was biz as usual. It seems more likely you are trying to read too much into things.

I doubt Edwin has any say in personel matters - that's Hill/Beinfest's job.

I think he was told

"Edwin, manage the way you feel will win ballgames thru the end of this season.

Meet with us regularly to discuss strategy & suggest roster moves - however, we will make the final roster decisions.

We will evaluate your performance at the close of the season; you will be among those considered for the job in 2011 and beyond".

Since officially being named manager for the remainder of the season (until then he was in limbo with an expectation Valentine or someone else would be charting the team's course) on June 29th in Puerto Rico, E-Rod has the team 10-8, which considering everything going on is certainly better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. He remains the FO's "guy" but at least for 2010 that may not be a bad thing as we understand that's why he's there. His success is as much a referendum on him as the front office because there can be no complaints from that quarter the manager wasn't following their express instructions.

Quietly, in his own way, I think he's doing an excellent job and I suspect his stature is growing throughout baseball because of it. I believe it's Eddie who calls him the "Anti-Fredi", for myself I've quickly forgotten why Gonzalez was here in the first place. To me Fredi was the latin Jeff Torborg, full of lame excuses and being too protective of players and their miscues, while E-Rod seems refreshingly unafraid to call out the team when they deserve to be for things that have been hampering success here for far too long. Fredi has no one to blame but himself and his rightful benching of Ramirez was, I'm afraid, just too little, too late.

The bench and bullpen have/had been so anemic that the Marlins were trying to find anyone that stuck. That's why so many AAA players have been called up. Or injuries.

The fact that Luna hasn't been called up makes it obvious that Beinfest is entirely running the show in that respect/

good summary....I'm also pleasantly surprise with the job that Edwin is doing.
