MLB Player Movement Thread

The player to be named later is a top prospect, a source tells Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic (via Twitter). They will choose the PTBNL from a short list, tweets Jon Heyman of SI, but it won't include 2009 first-round selection Mike Trout, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo (via Twitter). A D'Backs official says that the PTBNL is "outstanding", tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Ah, that makes WAY more sense then.

PTBNL should be LHP Tyler Skaggs whom the D'backs were high on in last years draft.

I can't imagine the D'backs were that high on Joe Saunders. He's a flyball pitcher and is going to get lit up in that ballpark in Phoenix. 2 more years of arbitration - cheaper than Haren .. smells like salary dump with D'backs counting on the 2 low-minors prospects to become middle of the rotation guys in 3 years.

I really hope the PTBNL is a top prospect. If it's not, that's a steal. A 30+ year old who has had one decent year, a 26-year-old who has been terrible in his limited big league action, and a C prospect at best for Haren.

Mike Trout would make it a really good trade. Fabio Martinez could make it a decent trade. They at least need to get one of their top 5 to make it somewhat even.

Skaggs is their #8 spec and first round draft pick from '09. 18 in A with pretty decent numbers. Eh, I still say they should get a top 5 spec but Skaggs would make it a decent deal.

Mets And Royals Discussing Francoeur, OthersBy Zach Links [July 25 at 6:36pm CST]The Mets are in talks with the Royals and three names from each side are "in play", tweetsKen Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Those Royals players are Gil Meche, Kyle Farnsworth, andJose Guillen while the Mets being discussed are Oliver Perez, Luis Castillo, and Jeff Francoeur. It is unclear how advanced the talks are, cautions Rosenthal (via Twitter).

While the two sides aren't necessarily looking at a three-for-three swap, tweets Rosenthal, the two biggest contracts do match up well. Meche and Perez's contracts are identical over the next two seasons, with both pitchers earning $12MM in this year and next.

Francoeur and Farnsworth also match up well, says Rosenthal (via Twitter). Farnsworth's contract has a club option for 2011 for $5.25MM, though he has the right to void it in favor of a $500K buyout if he is traded before the 2010 World Series. Francoeur will make $5MM this season before entering his final year of arbitration-eligibility.

Throwing Luis Castillo in there reminds me of the joke Mets organizational flow chart:

Angels Still Looking for a Big Bat...

The Angels haven't halted their pursuit of a power bat, sources tell Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Garrett Jones of the Pirates and Derrek Lee of the Cubs are two of the hitters that they are monitoring. However, sources could not confirm if Tony Reagins & Co. are in active talks for either player.

This certainly isn't the first time we've heard Lee's name linked to the Halos as they were said to be targeting him early last month. Lee, who turns 35 in September, has a no-trade clause in his contract. The slugger is in the final year of a five-year, $65MM extension he signed in April of 2006.

Jones broke out in 2009 with a slash line of .293/.372/.567 and 21 HRs in 82 games. The 31-year-old is hitting .273/.336/.427 with 12 HRs so far this season. Jones, who also plays in right field, has started 50 games at first base this season where he has a slightly below-average -4.0 UZR/150.

Either would be solid for the Angels and if they can get one of them then resign them for next year along with a returning Morales they could be dangerous next season.

This technically counts as player movement.

Tommy Hanson is now officially hired Scott Boras as his agent...

Also, the Yankees are heavily tring to obtain Closer Joakim Soria from the Royals.

Here's a Rumor going around

It wouldn't be late July without rumors of intriguing three-team deals. ESPN's Jayson Stark:

Rumblings continue to surface about a possible three-team deal involving the Nationals, White Sox and Diamondbacks that would send Edwin Jackson to Washington, Adam Dunn to Chicago and a bunch of young pitchers to Arizona.

If the Diamonbacks were to trade away Edwin Jackson after half a season it makes it even more dumb as to why they got involved in the Curtis Granderson trade last offseason and traded away Max Scherzer who despite having a .500 record this year at 7-7 and an ERA around 4.40, has 100 strikeouts in 105 innings and has showen promise for a few years now

The Yankees offered Montero for Soria, and the Royals supposedly turned it down. It's no surprise the Royals have sucked for years with decisions like that.

Yeah Monetero is a huge prospect and even though Wil Meyers is also a catching prospect for K.C. Monetro could be more of a DH/1B with his defensive abilities or lack there of.

It would be dumb if they rejected Monetro for Soria straight up or even Monetro and Prospect for Soria and prospect.

Who needs a super power hitting best catching 'spect in the game, especially for a guy who gets three outs a game?

Yeah, lets trade another potential quality reliever like Leo Nunez for Mike Jacobs, instead. :thumbup
