Back into the draft.

Whether Boras will have him play indpendent ball or go back to his junior college I don't know. I did here he registered for classes at Nevada again though, so he'll probably go back there.

He will end up signing. There's no way his stock could possibly go any higher than it is now, and given his dropping out of high school and getting his GED, he is clearly in a hurry to get paid. He, or his agent rather (Boras) is using a stall tactic. Will take it down to the very last seconds, to squeeze every penny possible. Not to mention, when his stock is as high as it is, it would be a horrible gamble on his part to go back to school and risk injury, or a down year. Registering for classes is just for leverage, so he can say he is prepared to go back to school.

Strasburg called him out for not signing yet....ironic

Strasburg needs to stfu and mind his own stuff, because he waited until the last minutes to sign. (11:58 pm)

Just because he waited until the last second to sign, doesn't mean it's on him. It could be that MLB made them wait that long to announce it. Could easily be that they had an agreement long before the deadline, but MLB made them wait until the last second because it was such a huge contract.

He didn't so much call him out, as he did say It's on him. He just said that if he didn't want to be there then they don't want him there. Nobady wants a teammate that doesn't want to be there. It wasn't saying that Harper implied he didn't want to be there. He was just saying the ball was in Harper's court on whether to be a Nat.

Nationals To Sign Bryce Harper

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 16 at 11:01pm CST] The Nationals signed first-overall pick Bryce Harper for about $6.5MM, according to Jim Bowden of Sirius XM Radio (Twitter links). The Nationals confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Harper. As expected, the sides did not announce a deal until the last minute.

The buzz surrounding Harper started last year, when he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a 16-year-old. Harper, still just 17, got his GED early, enrolled at the College of Southern Nevada and won the 2010 Golden Spikes Award as the country’s top amateur player.

What a crock... that much money and he apparently agreed at 11:59:30... seriously? Thats some Lebron-like NBA style negotiating. The old school in me says thats total garbage. Sign for something barely above the minimum, then prove yourself at a more professional level and then we can talk big money negotations coming down to final seconds. This crap can only get worse from here in the years to come. Strasburg, Harper, and the Nats have set a nasty precedent and I don't like it.

Nasty precedent?

That's how it's been for years and it's mostly because of MLB telling them to wait until the last second to announce deals because they are so far above slot money. It has nothing to do with Harper and the Nationals.

I hadn't paid such close attention the draft player deadline deals until Strasburg so I just figured it was a Nationals thing. Who else got this treatment in years past?

I think at least every 1st Overall Pick the last 6 or 7 years.

With a couple of other top 10 picks in the mix.

I have a huge feeling he's going to be a bust.

Also he's supposedly moving to the OF with the acquisition of Wilson Ramos.

I think he was going to the RF no matter what. The Nats want his bat on the quickest path to the bigs. I remember when they drafted him they said outfielder Bryce Harper and this was before the Nats got Ramos.

Oh alright yeah he has a cannon so right field should suite well.

Still don't think he hits nearly as well as he did in highschool or JC.

Rumor has it that by next year, or at worst 2012, MLB is going to move the signing deadline back to like July 15th, so that these players don't lose an entire minor league season due to negotiating ploys.

Still don't think he hits nearly as well as he did in highschool or JC.

So we shouldn't expect a .500 / 80 / 250 line? :p

His raw power is amazing though... if he doesn't get hurt, he damn well may be one of the top HR hitters of all time. And one of the highest averages of all time. And most OF assists of all time. And...

Well you get the idea. I believe the hype.

Raw Power doesn't get you much on it's own.

Prime Example: Joe Borchard. Some people forget just how highly touted his power was. When he was signed he had the highest signing bonus in the history of the league at the time and his nickname was "Light Tower Power".

And right now that light tower is on display every night for the Fresno Grizzles. At least he still has that record for longest homer at US Cellular Field.

And Borchard's problems mostly stem from an inability to make contact with the ball (Which is why some people were not high on Stanton).

And Harper racked up quite a bit of K's last year.
