He says that he doesn't expect Loria to spend much money this off-season because the stadium will be the draw next year. So no Pujols, Fielder or Wilson. He says the team you see now (and on the DL) is basically the team you'll see next year.

He thinks, but is not sure that they will spend in 2013 when the FA pitching list is better.

I think I'll be a bit disappointed if this comes to fruition...

Hopefully a link becomes available soon for the interview, they said it would be up in a few minutes (that was at 5:40 pm)

You seriously thought we were getting Pujols or any of those other guys? LOL

Fielder and Wilson were possibilities :( lol

Nah I joke. But I hope Loria does open his wallet this offseason...

EDIT: Also, how would you configure the line-up with a Fielder signing?

Bonifacio 3B/2B

Infante 2B/Coghlan CF

Hanley SS

Fielder 1B

Stanton RF

LoMo LF

Buck C

Coghlan CF/Dominguez 3B

Pitcher

... would be my guess.

I wouldn't give the comment any weight right now. You make it sound like it's just his speculation and not grounded in anything explicitly said by the organization.

This doesn't change anything in my mind until we hear more information.

No, not really, but Loria did promise to spend, and if this prediction of Kurkjian's comes true, I will be disappointed in Loria, and once again confirm all the reasons I don't trust him. He makes it so hard to be a Marlins fan sometimes.

Following what a lot of guys on here were saying Wilson certainly would have been a possibility perhaps.

This would also mean that Gaby has to go in a trade I guess. Would be settle for two or three minor leaguer's for him ?

It was just his speculation, and right now I guess that's all we can assume of it. But he does get access to inside stuff so maybe he has heard speculation from the inside ?

Or maybe he tries third base again if Dominguez isn't ready? Who knows...

Possibly but I thought I read on here, or heard on TV that the Marlins just don't think Gaby could ever be an MLB 3rd bagger.

Would be more a fail on Loria's part if he publicly declared he would spend big in FA and then the priority targets signed elsewhere. Keep plans close to the chest for the time being and then act when the time comes.

How in the hell can you listen to Sedano?

I don't really, but I do try to catch Kurkjian every week when he is on Sedano's show.

Oh come on..

speculation is speculation, i know it can be hard but lets be optimistic. The enthusiasm about the coming seasons from the FO seems genuine. i hope its f***ing genuine.

Kurkjian is on the LeBatard show, not Sedano.

woa, by the subject title I thought that maybe half the team was being suspended and the Marlins would be banned from post season play for up to three years.

You seriously thought we were getting Pujols or any of those other guys? LOL

yes.

I'm about to give up on this team

I have relatively no interest in Pujols or Prince. Pujols will have an enormous backend of the contract and not be worth it down the road, and Prince will not age well as a butterball who already has horrific defense and base running stats. He's not a 6 WAR player which is what his contract will pay him.

Wilson, will probably be overpaid, but he'd be great. Him or Buerhle would be fantastic, but I'm expecting them to sign a guy like Paul Maholm on a 2 year deal instead which isn't really terrible. Additionally, I expect them to bring in 4 veteran bench players to back up Coghlan and Dominguez, replace Helms and Bonifacio/Amezaga, on the bench. Add in a healthy Johnson and Hanley, and another year of growth for everybody, I'm pretty happy with the team. The only defection of note is Infante.

Saving payroll post 2012 is the smart franchise decision. Free agency is much much much deeper. You know how you please the fans? 7 year contract for Stanton, 3 year contract for Anibal, 3 year contract for Bonifacio, and above moderate free agency moves. If it looks like the pitching is going to hold up, there is always the ability to get a player in June/July. This shows a strong commitment moving forward. It lacks a "new" superstar, but that doesn't matter. The Marlins have to maintain a smart payroll strategy.

I take this as good news. Don't spend to spend. Then you become the Mets and Orioles.

The Marlins have zero shot at competing in this division unless they make major moves or everyone else suffers major injuries.

nah, man. the team should just re-sign all the players that lead the team to an awful record this year, so we can keep this tradition going into the new ballpark

I think people need to stop assuming that Coghlan is going to be an everyday starter for this team next year. He seems to be made of glass and he hasn't shown any ability to make the adjustments to his hitting to keep him in the major leagues. Even if he stays healthy, I'm not sure he'll be more than a 1.0 WAR player. I don't see his defense improving much and I'm skeptical that he hits at a level even close to where he was in the second half of 2009.

This means that the Marlins are going to have to get CF figured out in the offseason, to prevent another scenario where they need a bunch of losers like Wise and Cameron to get most of the playing time.

Clearly the Marlins need to add some CF depth that will be adequate enough in possibly getting a lot of starts, or they need to be making Bonifacio the everyday CFer.

While I didn't mind the return in the trade, I really wish Maybin were still around. He's a 4.0 WAR player this season and probably has a brighter future than Coghlan does.

I doubt that the Marlins go into the new stadium with their biggest signing being Paul Maholm.

Dominguez with a mediocre bat as you say, is a plus player at his position with his expected defense. Do not sell this short. Dominguez with a mid .600 OPS is probably a backend top 18-22 3B starter in baseball. If he hits at all, he will catapult up. When I said the Marlins need a veteran bench, I literally mean, looking at this horrible list below, that they go out and sign Betemit and retain Dobbs to be half your bench. It's literally the best they can do, and Dominguez has the most upside. If Dominguez starts half the games, Betemit 50, and Dobbs the rest, with Betemit and Dobbs rotating elsewhere, that's really deep and solid which is the best they can do with this market.

Third Basemen

Wilson Betemit KC Yes

Casey Blake LAD *

Eric Chavez NYY

Mark DeRosa SF

Greg Dobbs FLA Yes

Edwin Encarnacion TOR * can't really field at all

Wes Helms FLA

Melvin Mora ARI

Aramis Ramirez CHC to expensive, gets hurt, can't field

Miguel Tejada SF

Omar Vizquel CWS

Likewise with center fielders, what is there. I think you don't waste money on Beltran who is an injury risk, especially in CF. Swisher and Sizemore will likely be retained, so what do you do. Bring in Cody to platoon all over the outfield, is he cool with that (and will the organization forgive him?). Coco will be a head case if he isn't starting. Cameron is old, the rest stink. I don't see something here that screams "better than Coghlan." He needs a platoon partner. Despite his struggles, Coghlan had an .801 OPS vs RHP. There is talent here, and the organization needs to give him a second chance.

Outfielders

Rick Ankiel WAS

Carlos Beltran NYM

Milton Bradley SEA

Mike Cameron BOS

Coco Crisp OAK

Kosuke Fukudome CHC

Willie Harris NYM

Andruw Jones NYY

Nate McLouth ATL *

Jason Michaels HOU

Juan Pierre CWS

Cody Ross SF

Grady Sizemore CLE *

Nick Swisher NYY *

Likewise let's be cute and move Bonifacio to CF and not 2B, meaning we could sign a 2B instead

Second Basemen

Clint Barmes HOU

Willie Bloomquist ARI *

Orlando Cabrera CLE

Robinson Cano NYY *

Jamey Carroll LAD

Luis Castillo NYM

Alex Cora WAS

Craig Counsell MIL

Mark Ellis OAK

Carlos Guillen DET

Jerry Hairston Jr. WAS

Aaron Hill TOR *

Omar Infante FLA

Joe Inglett HOU

Kelly Johnson ARI

Adam Kennedy SEA

Felipe Lopez TB

Jose Lopez FLA

Aaron Miles LAD

Brandon Phillips CIN *

If Cano was a free agent, obviously sell the house for him but he's not. Phillips will be picked up. What's left? Kelly Johnson, who will be a Type A, or keep Omar and hope he brings it back. Count me in the group that if it's an either/or situation, I'll try out Coghlan in CF for no upside Infante. And I like Infante.

I think the lineup feature Buck, Gaby, Logan, Hanley, Stanton, and Bonifacio at 2B, Dominguez 3B, and Coghlan CF, with say Wilson Betemit, Greg Dobbs, Cody Ross, and Aaron Miles on the bench is LIGHT YEARS better than this year through health, depth, and progression.

Likewise, none break the bank so you keep all your cash free for a much deeper 2013 free agency class if it doesn't work out. This is the smartest thing to do with the market, unless they go nuts with Pujols, Prince, Reyes, or CJ.
