Andrew McCutchen, who made his first All-Star team before slipping in the second half of last season, is potentially available in trade talks, a source told ESPN’s Keith Law.

McCutchen just turned 25 in October and is four years away from free agency, so there’s certainly no pressure for the Pirates to move him now. It should also be noted that Law’s report doesn’t indicate that the Pirates are shopping him, just that they’d listen to offers.

Even that idea, though, would have seemed far fetched a few months ago. One factor influencing the Pirates here is that they’ve tried and failed a couple of times to lock up McCutchen to a long-term deal. Also, McCutchen’s overall lack of growth since he entered the league is somewhat disturbing. While McCutchen has added power, he’s no better of a player now than he was in a rookie. His strikeout rate took a big jump last season (from 89 strikeouts in 653 plate appearances in 2010 to 126 in 678 plate appearances), and he hasn’t proven to be much better than an average defensive center fielder. Marlins anyone????

I always thought he was considered a very good defensive center fielder....guess not.

Trade Gaby, Coughlan & Nolasco for him.. Then sign Fielder and Wilson :)

Who's Coughlan?

I've never heard of his Coughlan guy. Did we just sign him?

I know we have Chris Coghlan...

The Pirates have always accepted quantity over quality in trades. I see no reason why not to at least try to rip them off.

It's such a common misspelling, I'm surprised nobody realizes it. Doesn't matter.

Also, I fixed your grammar. Try again.

Yes, thank you, young lady.

This is why you, yes you, and not I, are the writer.

In that case, does somebody have a Bible I can borrow?

OK, back on topic.

Andrew McCutchen - I'd be for him, why not. I'm sure he's getting tired of raising the jolly roger.

The kid's a tremendous athlete with wheels and would be an upgrade in center field, but he's only "potentially available." If I'm the Pirates, I'm building my franchise around him. We'll see how real of a possibility Pittsburgh shopping McCutchen is during Winter Meetings.

But why try and build your franchise on one above average player when you can trade him and get four potentially average players! That's how the Pirates operate.

The Marlins don't have the pieces to get him. They'll probably go after a SP first and then they'll have nobody left.

Well alternatively getting McCutchen would mean we really don't need a bat in FA. We could realistically sign any two FA pitchers.

That being of course if we get McCutchen without giving up a current roster player.

Sean West, Chris COUGHLAN and a few others. Get ER DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bwahaha. Well played.

I don't think they'll be able to afford two starters. And they don't need a bat as badly. I like the plan to sign one starter and then trade for another. Sign a bat with whatever is less.

On top of that, I don't think the Marlins can land more than one of Wilson/Buehrle/Jackson without overpaying.

Are the Marlins looking at Edwin Jackson? If so, no thanks. There has to be a reason he's been passed around like Kim Kardashian at an NBA All-Star Game.

I also like the option of trading for another starting pitcher just because it seems that the pitchers are more expensive than the bats, save Pujols. Just talking in terms of the 'dream team FA pool', trading for a pitcher, signing a big pitcher, and getting a guy like Cespedes is much more imaginable than signing two big pitchers in the FA market and then trading for a bat.

But anyways, I choose to ignore everything I'm hearing until I see something happen. Who knows... maybe we'll walk out the Miami Heat of baseball... maybe we'll walk out with nothing.

well they're probably going to be overpaying on any big names that they get.
