Marlins manager Redmond tears Achilles tendon

Recommended Posts

Marlins manager Mike Redmond endured some bone-jarring collisions at home plate during his 13-year career as a major league catcher.

He took pride in dusting himself off and getting back behind the plate. So it was a surprise to Redmond when his right Achilles tendon let go this past weekend while he and his brother were playing a doubles tennis match.

“I didn’t do anything. It just popped,” Redmond said Tuesday at the major league Winter Meetings. “It’s about being 43, I guess.”

Redmond said he will have surgery Friday. The injury will keep him off the ski slopes in his native Washington state this winter, but he was philsophical about it.

“The good thing is there isn’t much snow, anyway,” he said.

Redmond has plenty to smile about this offseason in the wake of the Marlins signing slugger Giancarlo Stanton to a long-term contract, a process the manager participated in throughout the negotiations.

He was optimistic the Marlins will be able to take additional moves to improve the club this offseason. The team is attempting to obtain a power bat at first base and an established starting pitcher.
