Guest Guest
I think it means they are still willing to trade him but he'll report if they don't instead of retiring. Just a guess on my part.
Bret Hart 43
Haren made wise decision. Good to be back
SilverBullet 2,273
Off the top of my head, the last week or so has been them trying to trade him, maybe he saw them trying in good faith and thought highly of that. I mean the Marlins could have easily said "pitch for us or retire, period." Either that or Harens wife just recently asked him for a ten million dollar pair or shoes or something. Also, on the first day of spring Haren should be locked in a room with Stanton for a little talk just to make sure Harens attitude is in the right place.
Wild Card 0
I think he realized the marlins have more leverage to move him if they don't HAVE to move him...
Erick 219
Well, this is the worst thing that's happened this offseason. Thanks Haren.

dim 0
I think it means they are still willing to trade him but he'll report if they don't instead of retiring. Just a guess on my part. I think the only reason they wanted to trade him was because he was unwilling to play for us. The plan seemed to be from the front office that they wanted Haren first and foremost for next season. Looking at how the rotation matches up, that line of thinking makes sense. Haren would put him as the #4 in the rotation and Koehler at #5 to start the year, with Phelps relegated to the bench and useful if any pitcher gets injured or sucks. Without Haren it's Koehler and Phelps to start the year with Brad Hand as the contingency plan. As long Haren doesn't let his "missing home" ruin his pitching next year, then he adds to the team. While it's pretty unlikely, hopefully he's more 2011 Haren than 2012/2013/2014 Haren. He was a pretty top tier pitcher before getting old and hitting his decline stage. SilverBullet 2,273
So what does this do to the construction of our pitching staff? Barring injury or further moves, our rotation is set... Phelps and Hand are gonna be competing for long relief roles, this ends the rarely mentioned outside possibility of Aaron Crow being a starter, it likely makes Hand our second lefty in the pen, either that or he's gone as he's out of options. Our Rule V guy McKirahan is now on the bubble as I'd say he and Hand are competing for the same spot. This also puts a lot of these fringe non roster type pitchers at risk as one spot is now gone. Basically there's much less competition this spring with this one move. Also, if he does pitch, Haren is now the placeholder for Jose, not Latos who was it by default. What does that even mean? If Haren is struggling in July we can only hope the Marlins are willing to DFA him as they did with Dobbs Marmol and Gregg last year. Their lack of insistence on keeping these guys bodes well in case Haren struggles. Who knows but there's a chance a struggling Haren doesn't even make it to the month of June. We shall see... Guest Guest
Pitcher Dan Haren, who had been considering retirement, has informed the Marlins that he will report for spring training, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. But that doesn't mean that Haren necessarily will pitch for the Marlins. Haren, 34, has again asked the Marlins to trade him to a West Coast team so that he can be closer to his family in Southern California. The Marlins have found no takers to this point, but they have renewed attempts to trade him and there's still a possibility a deal could be worked out. As part of the trade with the Dodgers that sent second baseman Dee Gordon and Haren to the Marlins, the Dodgers agreed to pay Haren's $10 million salary next season whether he pitches for them or not. The Marlins want to keep that money whether they retain Haren or not. So a team trading for Haren would need to pay his $10 million salary. If the Marlins trade Haren, that $10 million would be allocated toward paying Mat Latos' projected $8.3 million salary. The Marlins would gladly welcome Haren because they believe he's still a quality big-league starter and would be effective in spacious Marlins Park. And Haren has made clear to the Marlins that he believes they have a talented young team and that his desire to pitch on the West Coast is strictly family-driven. Haren was 13-11 with a 4.02 ERA last season. Left-handers hit only .226 off the right-handed Haren last season, but right-handers hit .279. If Haren ends up pitching for the Marlins, he likely would join Latos, Henderson Alvarez, Jarred Cosart and Tom Koehler in the opening day rotation, barring injuries. Ace Jose Fernandez is expected back by June or July. If the Marlins trade Haren, then David Phelps (acquired in the Martin Prado deal with the Yankees) or Brad Hand likely would be the fifth starter to open the season. The Marlins have not been involved in bidding for high-end free agents James Shields or Max Scherzer. So while there remains some uncertainty about where Haren will pitch, this much is clear: The Marlins know now he's not retiring (unless he has a change of heart in the next several weeks.) http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/2015/01/haren-pushing-for-trade-but-tells-marlins-he-will-report-to-spring-training-regardless.html#.VLNTE3g8eMA.twitter
Entendu 19
I think Haren makes the team better, and the Marlins look like they'd 'reallocate' his salary to Mat Latos. If he stays and pitches like he did last year, I'd be OK with it. He's a high floor type of pitcher at this point, I would say. I don't see him tanking and there's a possibility he could improve on last year's numbers. The K/BB rate is great and he'll benefit by pitching in Marlins Park. I hope he stays. Guest Guest
I also doubt he'd tank it.
SilverBullet 2,273
He'd have to be a Grade A Dick to spend six weeks of spring training and six, possibly seven, months of a season purposely tanking it halfway across the country away from your family just for ten million dollars. I mean I'd do a lot for ten million dollars but relative to Haren I doubt he'd do that. Plus there has to be a level of pride in not tanking his career numbers for this one season. MiamiFan 0
I hope we can keep him. He is a high floor type with great experience on the back end of the rotation. He would help more than he would hurt the team next year. I just hope he can drink the cool aid and try to be part of something that the front office is putting together. Iowa 98
The guy has no leverage. If he wants to retire, retire and don’t get paid 10M dollars. If he retires, we were already compensated. He tried and failed.. now it’s time to play baseball. Now he should be motivated to pitch well in the hopes of getting traded back out West.
