I'd have liked them to give him a shot but the FO saw this as a choice between McKirahan and Hand and they went with Hand for two reasons, he can start and he also has major league experience. I don't think the team wanted to lose Hand and take the chance that McKirahan, who hasn't even passed Double A, can't even get outs at the big league level on a team with playoff hopes. Also if McKirahan sucks and Hand goes, they're down one potential starting pitcher and numerous times theyve talked about having as much starting pitching depth as possible.
