SilverBullet
• The Marlins owe Dan Jennings the difference between his new salary and the $1.5 million they would have paid him this season if he hadn’t been fired. And the Marlins are fuming, and filed a grievance, because they’ve been told Washington is paying Jennings only $100,000 as a special assistant to general manager Mike Rizzo ...as per Barry Jackson today. Doesn't surprise me the Nats would lowball someone financially since they did the same to Bud Black. DJ won't care because one way or another he's still getting $1.5 million this year but sounds like the Nationals are taking advantage of the Marlins on this one. Admin
Eh pretty sure the Nats have the right to pay him anything they want if he agrees to it. Marlins fired a guy under contract. Deal with it and pay him whatever you are obligated to pay.
HanleyDavidson
Fuck Loria and Samson, pay up motherfuckers if not don't hire someone and fire them under contract like they do with everyone!
Guest Vince0926
False. This is correct. Marlins signed edwin jackson for league minimum. Cubs are on hook for $12 million. Why anyone would want to pay edwin jackson $0.50 is beyond me but thats what happened. Marlins are cheapskates. Nationals are low ballers. Low ballers will take advantage of cheapskates. And marlins are not stupid enough to go half and half on the jackson contract.

But marlins and loria and dunn and hand and the trade of cabrera and the rain delay opening day and the ozzie comments and the salty contract and the dismantlings and cody ross bashing us....bad things happen to us. legacyofCangelosi
Is there a collective bargaining agreement that governs these sort of deals with front office and management ? What I mean to say is what is the Marlins legal ground for this grievance ?

SilverBullet
I don't think I can agree with u guys here. Forget the circumstances of Jennings' situation and firing here. If the Nationals hired DJ to be special assistant to the GM then he should be paid similarly to others with that same title. The Edwin Jackson situation is different because players sign for the major league minimum all the time. Unless you can tell me other "special assistants to the GM" sign for as low as Jennings did then I don't think the Nationals are right here. If that isn't the case the Marlins can win this case easily.

What I mean to say is what is the Marlins legal ground for this grievance ? The comparison to other teams salaries for the same job title is the legal ground for this, I would imagine. If no other person in that position is paid that low I think the Marlins have a case. Of course Admin has a strong point that Jennings agreeing to the salary could be what screws the Marlins over here but I still think the Marlins have a case here assuming, again, that Jennings salary is way below others in his position. Admin
There's a min salary for players in the CBA as mentioned, so players and teams can't do anything about it. There is no rule for employers unless we are talking minimum wage. I guess technically they have to pay Jennings at least $10 an hour or whatever min wage is in DC. Beyond that, employer and employee agree on terms. That being said, this was obviously intentional on DJ's part to agree to it but who can blame the guy? He gets the salary he expected to get and he makes his old employer pay it while making his new employer happier.

Admin
DJ got a really raw deal from the fish. He stepped up and ran the team when he was asked to and then in return, they show him the door. They signed a contract with him, he was willing to stay with the team and they fired him. They are therefore responsible to pay him. If he wants to work, he should be able to and it should be up to him (and his new employer) how that money goes. Marlins have no rights here and should lose this grievance. Marlins have no rights here and should lose this grievance. You're mixing up emotional connections to this thing with the facts. The Marlins mistreatment of DJ has nothing to do with this. This should simply be a matter of every team listing how much their "Special Assistants to the GM" make and comparing that to Jennings. If no other person in that job position is paid as low as Jennings the Marlins absolutely have a case. It is possible that there is no limit to how low the salary can go but I think the Marlins do have the right to question this situation. I agree with you that DJ got a raw deal with the Marlins but that is actually irrelevant here.
