does Cashner has to shave now?

 

 

Giving them Capps was just unnecessary. And I would have much preferred giving them Nicolino but Im sure the Marlins were hell bent on keeping him, because you know, he's a real gamer.

 

 

Do I care too much about what we got? No not really. Cashner has potential but overall it's two starters with career 4+ eras and a 25 year old prospect.

 

My question is do I care about what we gave up? I hate cosart and think he sucks so it's nice to see some team want him. Carter Capps is great but now has injury concerns that worry me. Josh Naylor sucks to give up on, but he's giving me colin moran vibes in the minors. Ok hitter that'll likely reach the majors but will never be better than average. He's a middle prospect for most teams but our top one bc our farm is terrible.

 

I've hyped Castillo a lot since he's been a big breakout prospect but in the end he's following a very similar career to urena. Reliever turned capable starter but far too early to tell. All indications are Castillo is a reliever down the line.

 

This team needed starters. We're basically Fernandez/Conley and nothing else. Were these the right guys? Probably not, but the trade market was barren of good pitchers and so was our farm. The farm will eventually be brought to life when we steal a teams top prospects in the Jose Fernandez deal, but for now we have a chance at the playoffs. Our best shot at them in seven years. We haven't made it in 13. I am happy to see the front office knows this is our shot and taking risks. We did the same thing in 2015 and it failed, thus the barren farm system. But I'm happy to see them trying. Cashner has a veteran presence and has a chance to be huge down the stretch.

One of the ESPN writers quoted a scout who said it best, Cashner is like a better version of Eovaldi. Both have great stuff that should allow them to be better than they are but they aren't. Granted, Cashner's work in 2014 and 2015 was solid but he had trouble staying healthy.

When he connects with his swing the ball jumps. His bat speed is ridiculous as is. With a few tweaks to his footwork on the way up as in finishing his swings more (I've seen him let go of the bat tons on follow thru) he could turn into prodigal power material.

Dude has amazing arm speed which he controls and slows down advantageously on his ridiculous changeup. His slider is still developing but it's already plus. He could very well be pitching in AA right now and probably will be soon.

 

Throw in the fact we lose Capps and this is a fleecing by San Diego. In a word, ouch.

I agree with naylor. He's just 19 and I hate letting him go. I'm more upset giving players like Moran and naylor significant signing bonuses and unloading them 1 or 2 years later. It just comes across as a waste of an investment, especially for a team that is stingy with their spending.

 

 

Glad to see the front office trying, but the front office just has no clue how to deal.  Capps was unncessary and I still had hope for Naylor

 

 

As for castillo, he's a good pitcher but he's pretty much where urena was at one point as a prospect. Castillo spent a ton of time as a reliever and is just now breaking out. He's still too much of an unknown at the moment to get upset about losing.

 

As for capps, the injury is a big deal. We have no idea if he'll even come back as the same pitcher as before.

 

Overall I'm only upset about giving away naylor, but even he's an unknown commodity. In a playoff race you have to give up high potential long term guys for lower potential now guys if you want to win NOW. That's just how it works. None of the guys we gave up are untouchables. All are average to below average players/prospects at the moment. I don't see us having sellers regret about any of them.

 

 

I take it back, the board is not 100% in agreement. It may never happen which is good cause the boards would get boring.

My views aren't about what we got. Cashner was what the team wanted, a veteran starter who has shown in the past an ability to go deep and games and be a #3 starter. It's a risk. I'm not hugely high on him but he was one of the only starters at a reasonable price in a bad market.

 

My analysis was what we gave away. I see that as a return that people will overrate and over time realize how much unknown value we gave up. I'm not regretting the guys we lost.

 

In all honesty the one guy I had real hopes for in the system is paddack. That's the only trade I'm mildly dissapointed in.

With Wei-Yin Chen out, Cashner and Rea become the Marlins' fourth and fifth starters, respectively, with Cashner presenting a small upgrade over Justin Nicolino but not a huge one unless he stops giving up home runs. Rea's probably a better fifth-starter option than the Marlins' internal candidates. This seems more like a move that keeps the Marlins afloat in the wild-card race than one that pushes them ahead of any of their competitors.

TJ is like 80% success rate now and probably even higher for Rps. Why does anyone think he won't come back just fine? 

 

 

The Marlins don't make this deal without Capps.

 

It's meh to me though. I don't give a fuck about Naylor because I think he sucks, but the team isn't much better after this move. It's a kind of lateral desperate move that Mike Hill made to show Loria that  he tried.

 

 

My biggest issue is the same thing -- what the fuck are Cashner and Rea going to accomplish in terms of positive ball? Say what you want about Naylor, but I'd rather take a chance on a trash prospect than have a rental player come and throw high 4 ERA baseball. Guys like Urena and Cosart could do that.

I just didnt see the need to give them Carter Capps. 

Yea this. I don't mind the trade and overpaying because we need to make a push to stay afloat but Capps was unnecessary. It was an overpay before Capps and now it has become a raping.

The Marlins got cash in the deal despite two pre-arb players and a guy who is a free agent in two months coming back. I'm fairly certain the inclusion of Capps was to get money back from the Padres.
