Braves get Dickey

Not surprising Marlins didn't go for Dickey. I mentioned him but he was a bit more down on the list of guys for the Marlins to go after. It seems the Marlins want some pitchers with a bit more long term viability as opposed to a real 1 year guy, which is what Dickey would be.

Just low risk and high reward deal. As a knuckleballer, Braves thought Dickey will find own groove at NL east division again.

the marlins FO still thinks this is the 2002 baseball world and hence can't fathom spending $8m for one year on a pitcher with an era that high (their only factor when acquiring pitchers)

It's actually low risk/low reward. The Braves aren't using him necessarily because he'll succeed in the NL East, they are using him as a stopgap to some of their young arms in their farm system that can come up this year (Fried, Weigel, Newcomb). He might also be a slight improvement over Wisler or Blair at the moment. Then, at the trade deadline, they trade him to a contender for something of value. They've been doing this with pitchers and hitters to build the depth of their farm, and this continues the trend. The Marlins example is when they traded them Jeff Franceour in the three team trade that also included the rangers for Dylan Moore and Matt Foley.
