You may be able to pitch with a partial tear but once it starts hurting, its game over. Wasted an entire season instead of getting the surgery done. The medical staff gives all the reports and diagnosis but it's the players choice on what they'd like to do and Chen has consistently avoided surgery hoping he'd get better, inevitably delaying the time line for him to ever actually be better.
