fish20
If the Volquez and Chen contracts arent insured the Marlins are fucking dumber than anyone could have fucking imagined. Winning costs money. they didnt have blood clots like chris bosh. they have elbow injuries. no one is insuring to pay the entire contract of pitchers who have elbow injuries. that's just baseball. You really dont understand how big baseball contracts work do you? Maybe not Volquez cause it was only a 2 year term (dumb deal), but the Chen deal should have been. fish20
?? you cant just say all we need is a number 1 and number 2 rotation guy and then argue that we are close. this team was nowhere near close as constructed.
SixYearItch
that wouldnt have made us anywhere near playoff contenders still. there was no feasible way to make the core a playoff contender given our lack of farm system and our contracts given out in the last few years. LORIA. I just think you are all forgetting that until the pitching completely blew up in September and we were giving up 7, 8, 9, 10 runs and over in way too many games we actually were in wild card contention. But that's okay, we are where we are and all we can hope for is someday the team will be in a better place and something other than a laughing stock. Right now, the stench is too overwhelming. Right now, the stench is too overwhelming. being in "wild card contention" in the day and age of the 2nd wild card doesnt mean anything. And we never got closer than like 4 games from the 2nd wild card in august. we were in no way in contention this year. That just shows how bad this franchise has been for the past 10 years that you think being .500 and 4 games out of the 2nd wild card in late august is anything to get excited about. And our pitching didnt "blow up" in september, they performed to their talent levels.

fish20
Actually I can and our offense and defense say otherwise. we were 11th in the league in runs scored, 10th in on base percentage, and 14th in slugging percentage. Our offense was above average but nothing special. And that included career years from Stanton and Ozuna as well as Realmuto and yelich and Dee all staying healthy the entire year. and again, saying youre a number 1 and number 2 pitcher away is one of the dumbest things ive ever heard. that means youre nowhere close to actual contention

fish20
HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. Most policies have preexisting condition clauses. If a player has a history of a particular kind of injury companies will not cover or it or the premium will be cost prohibitive. This is particularly noticeable with pitchers who have had ulnar collateral ligament replacement (Tommy John Surgery) or shoulder surgery. https://www.quora.com/How-much-do-MLB-teams-pay-to-insure-their-players No one was insuring Volquez or Chen with their injury histories. Makes no sense from an insurers perspective.
Das Texan
While the Stanton deal was dumb.... Its the contracts of Chen (caused by the god awful job of Mike Hill and co drafting and signing talent); Tazawa (which was a stupid Loria/Hill deal), Prado (why such a long term); Volquez (made no sense with no bidding war for him); and Ziegler (paying that much for a non closer was beyond stupid) that is hurting hte Marlins. That and this ownership group is beyond cash poor. After 2018, financially things improve from a bad money standpoint.

Adding a two top line starters isn't a dumb idea. But believing this is the solution knowing who is behind is the dumbest thing I've heard. SilverBullet
Ya know, baseball can be so weird sometimes... wouldn't it be something if the Marlins win their 3rd World Series before the Yankees win their 28th?

SilverBullet
I don't think there is any kind of conspiracy, of course, but the optics look really bad here. And this could hurt the team in the PR sense. No one with a brain can believe that to be true.

But believing this is the solution knowing who is behind is the dumbest thing I've heard. we outscored the team with the best record by 8 runs for the season..... and they allowed 242 less runs than us over the course of the year. you have no idea what youre talking about. Im not saying adding 2 top line starters is a dumb idea. Im saying there is no feasible way to do that. Saying "oh, we're so close we just need to add 2 top line starters" means you arent remotely close to being a contender.
