2018-2019 Off-Season Thread

Before he signed a minor league contract with the Marlins in November, Harold Ramirez received offers from 15 teams, the outfielder tells Walter Villa of Baseball America (subscription required). The Blue Jays, with whom Ramirez played at the Double-A level from 2016-18, offered the largest bonus ($32K), but he accepted the Marlins’ $25K proposal because he believes they present a more immediate path to the majors. In fact, the Marlins informed Ramirez that only one of their outfielders, Lewis Brinson, is a lock for a major league roster spot in 2019. Considering the dearth of established outfielders on hand, the 24-year-old Ramirez – formerly a well-regarded prospect – will have an opportunity to vie for a big league job with the Marlins.

It makes sense. Definitely a smart move for Ramirez.

He batted .320 with an .836 OPS in AA last year and in the Venezuelan Winter League, he hit .381 with a 1.016 OPS. Total of 685 plate appearances (so a full season, really) between the two leagues, 49 doubles and 15 homers, 21 steals.

Total slash line between the two leagues: .335 / .390 / .493 / .883. Defense, doesn't seem to have the most range in the world which could be a problem in Miami, but as long as he hits ...

He could be pretty serviceable in the big leagues, methinks.

Talk about dropping the ball in 2009 for the Mets ...

Get it? Cause that's what -- wait, shit, wrong Luis Castillo.

Still can't believe that play happened to Luis f'n Castillo of all people. That's one of those "truth is stranger than fiction" moments.

Bet he did it on purpose because he really wanted the Mets to still lose.

Especially considering, after he dropped it, he very softly tossed the ball to the shortstop at second base instead of firing home, or at least towards home. Very probable that he panicked, but even so.

Are we able to sign him, though? Haven't we spent our international allotment?

I believe we have spent most of it if not all of it. Baltimore and LA are the most likely to sign him, that’s if he doesn’t decide to wait until the next signing period.
