The Miami Marlins opened their Grapefruit League schedule with a 5-3 win over the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie on Saturday.

Both teams exchanged runs early and then some solid pitching led the way for the remainder of the contest. Defense was shaky early, though weather played a role in those miscues. The conditions were windy at New York's spring home, with fly balls becoming an adventure early on. Other than the defense, Miami had a strong start to the spring and have some things to build on the rest of the way.

Monte Harrison picked up a base knock in the first inning and stole a pair of bases as well. The outfielder ended up 1-2 on the day with a run scored and he was a part of the aforementioned shaky defense. Harrison was tagged with an error when he dropped a ball in the bottom half of the first. Harrison battled the sun on the play and simply couldn't get his glove under the ball in time to make the play. Harrison also was unable to nail a runner at the plate on a sacrifice fly, when his throw went up the third base line. Harrison may have been trying to compensate for the windy conditions at the time. The 24-year old had a strong throw to the plate during the frame as well and is off to a good start this spring overall.

Harold Ramirez is trying to land a roster spot and he did a good job of setting the stage for one. Ramirez launched a missile over the left field stands for Miami's first home run of the spring. The 25-year old served as the designated hitter in this game and he only had one at-bat. Ramirez should continue to see at-bats this spring and should draw a few starts in the outfield as well.

Lewin Diaz plated Miami's go-ahead run in the eighth inning, while Jerar Encarnacion hit a solo homer in the ninth. Both prospects are in camp early, but neither is expected to make the team out of spring training. Diaz and Encarnacion each went 1-2 on the day. Jazz Chisholm did not start, but he made an impact once he entered the game. Chisholm is one of Miami's top prospects and he went 2-2 in his spring debut. The 22-year old also scored a run during Miami's victory.

Garrett Cooper went 2-2 with a run batted in, as he continues to try and secure a starting job. Cooper is expected to fill a reserve role for Miami to begin the season, but those plans could change with a big spring. Cooper can play multiple positions and was one of Miami's best offensive players in 2019.

On the pitching side of things, Jordan Yamamoto got the game started with two innings of work. The right-hander allowed a pair of earned runs on three hits and he struck out two. Adam Conley, Robert Dugger, Yimi Garcia, Ryne Stanek and Stephen Tarpley combined for seven innings of scoreless relief following Yamamoto's outing. Garcia was credited with the win, while Tarpley came away with the save.

Miami will be back in action on Sunday against the Nationals in Jupiter.
