All That Jazz - Chisholm Off to Fast Start

Recommended Posts

Jazz Chisholm is not competing for an Opening Day roster spot, but don't tell him that. Chisholm is 3-3 so far in the spring, with two runs batted in, a run scored and a stolen base. The 22-year old is one of the Miami's top prospects, and he may not be far off from taking his talents to Marlins Park.

Chisholm is in camp along with a number of other prospects and is making the most of the opportunity. Due to his young age and inexperience in the minor leagues, Miami is in no hurry to put Chisholm in a MLB uniform quite yet. The shortstop spent the entire 2019 season in AA and has a .321 on-base percentage across 458 plate appearances. Chisholm fared significantly better after Miami acquired him, and the club will now hope he can continue that progress. In 23 games with Jacksonville, Chisholm had a slashline of .284/.383/.494 and he swiped three bases as well.

Following the 2019 season, Chisholm headed to the Puerto Rican Winter League and he posted similar numbers to Jacksonville. In 11 games with Caguas, Chisholm slashed .286/.333/.457 with a pair of stolen bases. This was Chisholm's first taste of the PRWL, though he had played in an off-season league prior before. While with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chisholm took part in the Arizona Fall League in 2018.

Chisholm gives a lineup speed, as well as power and he is considered a dynamic player. The 22-year old has struggled with strikeouts so far in his career, but did improve on those numbers since joining Miami's organization. Marlins fans may think of Hanley Ramirez when they watch Chisholm play, with his game changing ability. Chisholm has approached 20/20 seasons the last two years and it could be just the beginning. A 30/30 season is not out of the question for Chisholm, which is something Ramirez did for the Marlins in 2008. Ramirez was a Rookie of the Year in 2006, so the bar is certainly high for this comparison, but Chisholm appears up to the task.

Miami has not announced where Chisholm will begin the 2020 season, but he could be headed to AAA Wichita. A big-league call-up in the latter part of the season is not out of the question, should Chisholm post a big year in the minor leagues. Chisholm is already on Miami's 40-man roster, which could work in his favor. The Marlins however may want to delay starting Chisholm's clock, with playoff contention not in the cards in 2020. If Miami goes that route, Chisholm's MLB debut could slide back to the 2021 season.

The Marlins have a number of options to turn to at shortstop until Chisholm is ready, though none are considered long term solutions. Miguel Rojas, Jon Berti and Jonathan Villar could all see time at the SS position in 2020. Rojas could pivot into more of a utility role during his multi-year deal with the Marlins, while Villar is only signed for the 2020 season. Berti will play all over the field and come off the bench often.

Chisholm and the 2-0 Marlins will be back in action on Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals at 1:05 p.m.

Good stuff, Jackson.

Found it interesting that Fangraphs sees him for more of a 2022 call-up. I wonder if that's due in part to the Rojas extension and the other depth we have at the position or if they just think he needs another year of development after this year.

Yep, I disagree with their thinking. But it of course depends on how he does this year in AAA.

Of course I almost want to see how the ball is there too cause we did get a little hyped up over Isan due to his AAA numbers and that was due to the ball a bit.

Then again I do think Isan's still going to be good. Not amazing, but good. If he's able to stay back and flip pitches the other way, then he'll be really good.
