Jeter "slammed" by Samson

Derek Jeter’s latest move in his purging of Marlins personnel is not sitting well with the team’s ex-president.

David Samson, who was let go when Jeter and Bruce Sherman took over Marlins ownership in 2017, slammed Jeter for dumping longtime Marlins exec Michael Hill after Hill’s contract expired.

“Jeter waited for Hill’s contract to finish and then jettisoned him. That was the plan,” Samson wrote on Twitter. “A successful season would not help because Jeter is taking the credit. A failed season would have given him an excuse to unfairly blame Mike. Good luck Derek, nowhere to hide now. #waittosee.”

Jeter, the Marlins’ CEO, told the Associated Press he “had to approach this as a new negotiation” with regard to Hill’s contract status, and the 46-year-old Yankees legend felt it was best to move on. Hill had been with the Marlins’ front office since 2002 and was most recently president of baseball operations.

The Marlins made a surprising run to the expanded MLB playoffs, going 31-29 and sweeping the Cubs in the wild-card round before being swept by the Braves in the NLDS — all after almost having their season derailed at the start with a coronavirus outbreak. It was the Marlins’ first playoff appearance in 17 years.

The outspoken Samson was Marlins president for 15 years until he was ousted by Jeter, who stripped down the organization and roster upon becoming CEO.

I need more details on the slam. Was it a scoop slam? A powerslam? A front slam? A side slam? Was it done running or standing?

Oh fuck, I feel a clothesline debate coming on again

Nothing wrong with Jeter wanting to bring in his own GM/pres of baseball ops... most wondered why he didn't do this earlier and the only doubts really came after Mike Hill seemingly exceeded all expectations over the last three years. But at the end of the day there's nothing wrong with Jeter doing this especially since he honored Hill's contract extension when he could have just as easily canned him three years ago. If anything, Hill's success is what made Jeter even consider keeping Hill longer if possible.

And what is this trash about Jeter taking credit? He's Derek Jeter. He's gonna get the credit no matter what and Mike Hill got plenty of credit for what happened this year but at the end of the day this team will be known as "Jeter's Marlins" for the foreseeable future no matter who is around him. The headlines when we clinched were "Jeter's Marlins clinch" not "Mike Hill's Marlins" so I don't see this as Jeter taking credit for anything. It's not like people were ignoring Jeter because of Mike Hill.

Samson is the last guy who should be criticizing how any executive does his business.

"New CEO lets existing contracts expire before bringing in his chosen replacements"

Why is this news?

Slow news day/month for NY baseball.

Jeter was in the news, NY newspaper found something NY baseball-esque to write about.

If anything this helps Hill's career. I imagine it would have been hard for him to get a similar level position if he had been fired day 1 considering how badly the organization was being run. Now that 3 years have passed and Hill got a chance to prove himself to the world, he looks like a lock to get a high ranking FO job elsewhere. Hill should be thanking Jeter for allowing him to stay for 3 years.

What is the obsession for the old regime to chime in on everything the new regime is doing?

If you want to talk about it at your cocktail parties, go for it. But no need to make public statements every time something happens with the marlins.

Speaking of which, funny how they were pretty quiet when the marlins made the playoffs. Funny how that works

Most former executives get hired elsewhere, but Samson clearly had no value to the industry so he just wanders around, crowing about some glory days that never happened.

To be fair, this crap seems to be like Samson's job now so I kinda get why he continues making public comments like this. As a comparison, has anyone heard a thing from Loria since 2017? That guy took his money and wisely stayed out of the public eye, Samson on the other hand has turned into a form of an entertainer and so he keeps this shit going.

It really is just Samson though, and at the very least he made one solid complimentary tweet when the Marlins clinched where he did acknowledge his part in the team's previous failures.

He's still a fool but it makes me question how much of what he does is just for show.

Loria has no reason to ever be in the public eye again. He walked away with a shitload of money and was able to just retire and enjoy the rest of his life. Wouldn't surprise me if he spends a lot of time over in France, he loved it there.

Samson is accomplishing his goal here, getting publicity for his tweets and therefore his podcast. He can be a bit of a jerk, but it is hard to say he is stupid.

Yeah, that's true.  Him inserting himself in the conversation helps his job now.

It's quite eerie. It kinda resembles his time with the Expos and Marlins. Him and his stepfather Loria seemed to operate in a sleight of hand to MLB and to the their teams fan base.

In 2014 Samson was a contest in a reality show called survivor Cagayan. a two-hour episode, featuring 18 new players divided into three tribes of six based on dominant attribute: "Brawn" (athleticism), "Brains" (intelligence), and "Beauty" (attractiveness and charisma). This was all filmed within the 2013 regular season. It was that important.

Lol. he's a real smoothie. Sounds self absorbed really.

Didn’t want to start a new Samson thread but Samson did an Interview with Lomo that is extremely interesting. Lomo calling out what I had previously thought that the Marlins had bad Trainers. Explains why several Marlins were always injured. Really good candid interview

Don't think we needed a LoMo interview to know that, but hey.
