Ooof, it's a long one (as Athletic articles tend to be) - give me a bit.

Good thing you're reading it and not @SilverBullet. He took an hour on that other one, this one may take him 24 hours.

Basically says a lot of former employees found him difficult to work with, he doesn’t like to be told he’s wrong, has high standards, and that he has a short fuse.  Basically blames a blowup he had in Greensboro about their bat dogs for why they are no longer a Marlins affiliate.  He claims he was angry that the dogs were too close to the players food...the Greensboro owner says he wanted the dogs removed.

After many words about how bad a person he is, the article did say he’s been better this year with more of his own people.

Overall it paints a pretty poor picture of him as a leader.  But it also kind of feels like people piling on, given the Marlins current situation and a lot of it is based on former employees opinions.

I do believe a similar article came out when he was hired as well - the part about him being incredibly difficult to work with because he doesn't like being told he's wrong and has a very difficult time accepting anyone else's opinion but his own.

Almost sounds like he had to get some "Yes Men" in place for him to have a less turbulent year two.

There's something to be said for people having high standards but don't confuse that for people who are just dicks to work for and refuse to believe they're wrong or shoulder the blame for their own mistakes because..."standards".

Long Story short:

Denbo sabotaged our relationship with Greensboro by being an absolute cocksucker to the team owner Moore about the Bat Dogs. Demanded they be removed by saying after one look at the kennels (paraphrasing) [Get those fucking dogs out here now]. Moore instead choose not to renew contract with Marlins- even after Jeter and Sherman both personally showed up and pretty much begged him to sign an agreement already. He made a decision, Denbo stays, and he leaves. He later signed an agreement with the Pirates, and thats how we ended up in Clinton. Sherman and wife tried to save affiliate deal at end of season, but couldnt. Greensboro guy really didn't like Denbo. Jeter and Sherman both cut scholarship checks in dogs name to try to fix it. Didn't happen.

He treats anyone overweight like shit, and fat shames even his scouts. His first meeting with scouts he told them to get in the gym. He now spins this as caring about their health.

He doesn't trust anyone outside of his own people and Dan Greenlee. If you contradict him, he pretty much blackballs you. He dismisses opposing opinions and relies strongly on analytics- which is how we lost Austin Nola but 20 team wanted him when he was released. Analytics said he sucked, but it was his first ever year behind the plate. Denbo washed his hands of Nola.

He relied on analytics for the Gordon, Stanton, Ozuna and Yelich trades- and that is largely why the deals seems to be failing, although it could be years before we know for sure.

Marlins viewed trading Stanton as a coup, and are happy to be rid of the $268MM they owed him.

Once saw a Minor Leaguer working out on his own on the back fields of jupiter. Minor Leaguer felt he was being mean mugged. Went to introduce himself and say hi. Denbos says "Do you know who I am". Player responds no, but its a pleasure to meet him. Denbo asks if hes in physical shape, and minor leaguer says he can loose some weight, and he's working on it. Denbo "Good, because if your not in fucking shape you wont be on this team" and leaves. He was cut a month later, and the kid isn't in baseball anymore. Was a Palm Beach Kid too.

Refused to draft David Weathers kid because he was a doughy figure, and talked shit to the scout who called him an above average athelete due to him playing basketball.

Demanded minor leagues lose weight, which was ok. 35% overweight when they reported last year. This year 5%.

Yankees people were happy he was leaving, and they didnt want to resign him. They point to a player he wanted signed that was 5 foot 1. Everyone said no, including GM. He went behind their back and signed the kid to a contract. He did well in single A, but was released, he's out of baseball.

Denbo in short : Short tempered, dismissive, narsasistic, perfectionist who believes fat people are disgusting and uses peoples appearance to judge who they are. He's single handily pushed away most of the old staff by being a prick and ended one of the better minor league agreements we had. He's softened up some this year, but he's still an asshole and people are jumping ship.

Jeter refused to comment, but Jeter picked Denbo and Greenlee.

Yeah there was a similar article last year.

I don’t know much about Denbo.   Maybe he’s just a jerk that wants to be surrounded by “yes men”.   Ultimately, he’ll be judged on how much talent he can bring in and if they win.

However, like I said, the entire article feels like piling on when the team is down.  There’s paragraph after paragraph of former employees saying why he’s terrible and then towards the end it says that this year has been a kinder, gentler Denbo and gives an example from an employee that was a holdover from the past regime.

Maybe Chip gained a few lbs and that is why Denbo demanded he would be tossed.

Sounds to me like Denbo is running the team or at least making tons of decisions, while Jeter is more of a figurehead. At least on personnel decisions, possibly more.

Maybe he feels swinging hard 3x in each at bat in the bigs will help O'Brien drop a few pounds so that's why he keeps getting called up? It's starting to make sense.
