.....if MLB is going to blatantly get calls wrong?

 

 

We all know what happened to the Marlins the other day, but this happened to the Braves last night....

He clearly didn't touch the plate, and I understand in real time you probably don't see that.  But multiple camera angles show he didn't touch the plate, yet they reviewed it and upheld the safe call.  I don't care about the Braves losing, but why does MLB bother with having replay if they're going to get these calls wrong?

We can easily make jokes about how this is a conspiracy against teams like the Marlins but I have to figure that the more this stuff keeps happening the rules of replay are gonna have to change sooner or later.

It is almost a relief to see that it is widespread. 

This really can't happen...wins have to be transparent, obvious, and absolute.

I will say, though I obviously don't follow other teams like I do the Marlins, it does seems like it happens to the Marlins fairly often/more often than other teams, though.

Only when it happens against the Yankees or Red Sox or a "bigger" team (ATL is up there, though), or happens in a playoff series will they look into doing something about it.

The good news is it happened on ESPN, in front of a much larger than usual TV audience, so that will certainly help a possible change.

I wanna say somebody did research (maybe at Baseball Prospectus?) one time that showed umpires call slightly more favorable strike zones for large home crowds. I wouldn't be surprised if that unconscious bias then feeds into close plays and maybe even replays?

I mean, imagine if that strikeout/HBP happened in Yankee stadium in a Mets vs Yankees game. No way on earth does that umpire call for anything but a K.

They were playing in Atlanta, though, so by that logic, it would've "benefited" them to call it for Atlanta.

My Cardinals had a play where the batter was hit in foul territory and they ruled it an out over the weekend. 

Its comical how fucking bad it is and how so many things that 'should' be replayed simply arent able to be replayed.

Fantastic job by MLB and the MLBUA and I think the MLBAPA also on this one.
