Home Runs from Bullpeners

Recommended Posts

When the Marlins reconstructed the BP from last year to this year, they did not target high strikeout guys, but guys with low HR rates. At the same time, the team had a significant exodus of BP options with high HR/9 rates in 2020. I will list the main contributors here with their innings and HR rates so that we can discuss how effective the strategy was. I will only list the guys from last year who either had 10 or more innings as a primary reliever option or were reasonable options for the 2021 BP. For the 2020 guys, I have bolded the ones who were not retained prior to Spring Training. Also, I only included the stats as a Marlin for guys traded midseason.

What I am seeing is that Bass, Detwiler, and Campbell were the guys who broke from camp with the team and have disappointed the most in terms of HRs. The pen has been roughly middle of the pack in terms of effectiveness, but BP management has been bottom of the barrel. Several of the more effective guys have been traded so we will have room to add guys next season. We should target 2-3 guys with strikeout stuff to use in the late innings for next season. Also, Bender despite his rough outing last night should be the closer for the rest of the year.
