Yep and then a replacement can get a "free" add to the 40-man and be removed without waivers when the sick player returns. However, Dunand was kept on the 40-man recently when he could have been a free removal upon the return of the Covid player he had been filling in for (Berti I think). Since they elected to keep him on the 40-man at the time, he now had to be DFA'd.

Erik Gonzalez for instance was able to just come off the 40-man without being exposed to waivers.

More top tier roster management.

Give Garcia a day off right after he comes off the IL, means he's not ready to play or Donnie just didn't want to play him.

So BA isn't available apparently and Garcia isn't either.  Cool cool cool.

Honestly they could have DFA'd Erik Gonzalez, nobody is going to claim him. Lol

(Hold off on the "but he's the greatest" jokes, SITA)

I know Garcia not good but it's weird not to start him with so many injuries in the team.

He hasn’t played in a week, he needs a day off.   That IL can be tiring.

Sure but didn't have to be lost, this was a case of bad roster management. No GM should be taking a who cares approach with their players.

Maybe Don told them I want the veteran defender in AAA versus the guy with limited upside? The FO doesn't care (I agree with Das and others), so they let Don pick? We don't know. I'm just saying - things are bad right now and there is a massive pity party going on but this is absolutely a "who cares" move that warrants no praise or criticism. We're talking about fringe AAAA players here. Let's have some perspective. Who cares.

I get all that. But someone on here the other day explained how/why Erik Gonzalez didn't have to be DFA'd to be sent down but Kim Ng couldn't figure out how to do that with Dunand.

Exactly. Nobody is saying Dunand is an all star, but it was simply another dumb move by her because it was easy to avoid. Just add it to the list.

Her fans will defend anything she does though anyway. They'll either blame someone else or say its no big deal. She can do no wrong.

ya they probably should have just transferred Luzardo to the 60 day IL (I assume he isnt on it currently).

You got an axe to grind with me for some reason, but just letting you know maybe read as your comment of she can do no wrong is as correct as saying Don can manage a bullpen - https://www.marlinsbaseball.com/topic/78402-the-fire-don-mattingly-thread/page/34/#comments

I'm pretty sure she and the whole organization knows how the 40 man works. There is definitely an open spot (or DFA Castano even if needed). I suppose we can say Dunand should still be here until he would be inevitably DFA'd in a week or two. That's the complaint? Again, who cares if it's a short term inevitability. It's just a pity party at this point. They are 7 games under .500 after having offseason expectations so every minor grievance is majorly amplified. I'm just saying, maybe it's worth taking a breath and looking at the big picture things that actually matter - like maybe it's time Ng put her foot down to Bruce and says we need to eat Mattingly salary and try something else. But misery loves company I suppose.

Ha. And right on cue - Girardi was fired and they have the similar positive run differential/one-run issues the Marlins have - "maybe it's time Ng put her foot down to Bruce and says we need to eat Mattingly salary and try something else"

The things that matter.

The Phillies just made that exact decision. Big one coming up for Ng here. Don should be on notice for the next bad loss IMO.

Except it’s also the small things that lead/add up to issues in the “big picture”

baby issues #1+#2+#3+#4 = 1 big issue.

if it were one or two little things, ok.  But when it’s repeated “little” issues AND some big issues on top of that, that’s a problem.

That run differential is a little overblown when you just beat a team 14-1 the other day.  I wouldn't say its a great indicator that this team is better than its record indicates.  The bullpen is mostly bad, and the starting rotation outside of three players (one now injured) has been somewhat abysmal.  There is little depth, and a lot of hitters have been really bad.  Yeah I think Mattingly has screwed up a lot, but this team really just isn't that good.

But they’re in every game!

For some reason certain people believe that it's either Bruce's or Don's fault that the roster is what it is even though since Ng has been in her role the bizarre roster mismanagement has been an ongoing trend that didn't exist previously before she was here.  The cheapness thing is a separate issue that does trickle down (obviously it would be nicer to have a Correa or someone with a sustainable babip% available every day to just plug in) but a GM has to also be able to work with what is available to them. Leaving the team for sustained periods with a short bench and/or rotation is a piss poor job as a GM that has been going on literally since Ng took over.  This isn't a job for the faint of heart - you don't get a 3-5 year "learning curve" to do the basics of your job.  You either do it or you deserve to get fired - which is what needs to happen right now (and take Don with her please).

But yeah, her defenders blame Bruce or Don for apparently telling Kim what he wants lol.  That's another tell though too, if your GM is not allowed to do anything on their own - that also means they're a pretty shitty GM that isn't trusted by anyone.  Either scenario/theory shows me enough that she's just awful.
