Sadly enough, I'm able to copy-paste most of last season's offseason writeup......the only part I removed was the Jeter quotes since Jeter isn't here, and Kim's quotes about money.......I could've replaced it with Kim's "hope and luck" comments, but I'd have to type that out lol.

 

Well, with the conclusion of yesterday's game, the Marlins' season is over, so we can shift into offseason mode. Obviously no moves will be made until the conclusion of the WS, but we can start a thread/the discussion anyway.

The big question - will they spend and make moves? For me, if they don't make an honest effort to - or don't - acquire several guys via FA and trades, I'm just going to take Stanton's advice an "watch from afar" - I'm not going to put in the time and effort of following the team and all their games if ownership won't put effort and money into building it. I've been supportive of the rebuild, and obviously on the pitching side, we've done well. They need to complement that and get the offense we need to compete. Getting scrap heap guys and rolling the dice as usual isn't going to work.


Obviously we won't know what will happen, but it's time to put up or shut up. Even die hard fans are ready to jump ship - I hope they realize this.

The pinning on "hope" and "luck" by Kim is not encouraging......I expect another lackluster offseason for the team.

I believe this will be mostly the same team run out there again next season.  I think Kim will make a trade for someone but it won't really be a player any of us get excited over and it'll be more along the lines of showing that they're not entirely inactive.  I don't see her ever trading top prospects for an actual proven MLBer.  I just don't see it happening at all. 

I think overall, we'll be in for an incredibly boring and thus very frustrating offseason filled with the usual rumors of "the big trade" that ultimately amounts to nothing of substance except the usual song and dance about how they feel they have guys who can "step it up" this coming season and fill those roles. 

I believe this team will be SLIGHTLY better next year, but still not at .500. I am basing that mostly on Avisail just getting back to his career norms and the assumption Jazz will return.  I'm thinking they'll maybe be a 75ish win team overall but that's also going to be very dependent on hiring a good replacement for Don and an upgrade over Thames as well.

If they happen to land upon the Mel version of a hitting coach then I could see this team getting to .500 or slightly over as they were THAT bad this season so even guys going up 50 or so points in their ops overall should see significantly better W/L results since, as has been pointed out, we tend to lose a shit ton of games where a single run makes all the difference in the world.

By the time Kim Ng realizes the offseason started, it will be May.

Sadly, the organization likely thinks that they're going in the right direction based on attendance figures, as this year's figures were the highest since the Sherman/Jeter purchase prior to 2018 when they started reporting actual bodies in the park rather than tickets "sold".

2018 was the literal dumps as everyone knew the team was tanking coming off the trades of Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna, Gordon, etc. And the new ownership hadn't done anything to be in the good graces of the fanbase yet. So 2018 being the lowest attendance makes perfect sense. They almost literally said don't even bother coming out.

Now since then, why would it have gone up in 2022 even though the team is still bad?

In 2020 they had a good team but zero fans allowed in the ballpark... going into 2021 the team was looking improved and fans were ready to return to ballparks BUT attendance was at reduced capacity due to covid restrictions...

Going into 2022 the team did add over $80 million in free agency so they looked like they were improving again and then the covid restrictions were lifted so an increase in attendance was almost guaranteed.

I'm not convinced Sandy's season helped 2022 attendance because the increases in his starts were probably offset by fans choosing not to attend the other games because the team was so boringly bad all season long. I chose to not attend any games in 2022, I can't be alone and I'd imagine those fans outnumbered those who said "Ooh Sandy's starting, I'll be there!" Team being bad outweighs one player being great.

As for fan perception they did a lot of things right between 2018 and 2022 to seem better than previous ownership so I think that would help.

That 2 year, um, "situation," that literally halted attendance, created a low point that attendance could only go up from there. I'd assume all 30 teams' attendance increased in 2022 over 2021.

Without the pandemic, if fans had been in attendance from 2018-2022 straight, I can't imagine Marlins attendance would be at a peak in 2022.

Now, considering how awful 2022 went, I'd be really concerned about next year's attendance. Without a massively successful offseason fans are gonna jump off the ship in 2023, there's no more fooling them without actual results.

Oh I agree 2022 was guaranteed to be higher than last year because of restrictions early in 2021.

I'd have to look up every single game and attendance figures, but I'd be interested to see the trend from beginning to end of year, I have to imagine it drops.

I'll tackle this sometime, because now I'm actually curious.

I also agree that 2023 shouldn't look good based on this year, unless they have a good offseason.

This was my optimistic hope, that she literally can't be this dumb and that she has to know better but just is really bad at hiding her true thoughts to the media... but every single time she opens her mouth she makes it more and more likely that she really believes all this crap.
