What exactly was Kim supposed to do in this situation?

Its not like Bruce Sherman was within 100 million of this contract offer.

Obviously Correa was never a target due to Bruce's wallet, you don't need to jump to her defense here. We're playing around since that's how she is with every signing.

She does need to figure something out though and rapidly.

It would be nice to solve at least one major issue on this roster headed into Spring Training.

I honestly believe both of them are ill-suited for their current roles which will be why they'll both be in those roles for another decade at least.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not even sure it matters who fills Kim's role as long as Sherman is at the helm. Yeah it would definitely be nice to have a GM who has some sort of a clue (like Beinfest), but at the end of the day, Sherman will never spend enough money to ensure that this team is consistently competitive. Maybe they'll have a lucky year somewhere, but sustainability just isn't happening under this regime.

If the owner sucks then it's even more important to have a GM who knows what they're doing. A great GM can help overcome the limitations that a bad owner brings.

Having even an average GM probably nets the Marlins 8 more wins or so over the last two seasons combined due to her leaving the team shorthanded for long stretches.

For a short stint, yes. But in terms of prolonged success? You need an owner who spends money to actually keep the guys you draft/acquire.

Look at the Rays - small payrolls, but great FO that overcomes that.

The Rays have been unable to get over the hump specifically because their owner doesn't spend money, so if anything that example actually proves the point that you need an owner who isn't a skinflint. The Rays might have multiple WS titles now if they actually spent money.

The Marlins have had plenty of elite talent come through their franchise over the last two decades, ranging from Cabrera to Hanley to Stanton, so it's not like the FO wasn't able to identify talent. They were just a.) unable to keep that talent because they didn't want to pay the money required to do so (e.g. Cabrera), or b.) they were unable to put the necessary pieces around said talent to actually win because they didn't want to spend.

Beinfest, for instance, did a terrific job here in 2003 and actually wasn't bad during his stint here. Aside from one year of Delgado, Loria just didn't spend enough to actually put the team into legitimate contention.

It's a fair point about the Rays not making it all the way because of cheapness....

BUT I'd rather have the Rays' recent track record of regular season success with cheap payrolls, and at least have chances to contend in the playoffs vs. our cheap payrolls with a decade+ of losing.

It also seems like our luck of finding homegrown (bats/lineup) superstars like Hanley, Stanton, etc, has run out recently.  And compounding it, every bat target, whether FA or trade, seems to fall on their face when they get here.
