The Padres have agreed to a four-year, $16.5MM contract with free agent left-hander Wandy Peralta, Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic report. The deal contains three opt-out clauses, meaning Peralta will have the annual ability to opt back into free agency.

Wandy you think he'll arrive in camp?

Interesting..

I always thought his name was spelled “Juan D. Peralta”.

Honestly wouldn't shock me if that's what his parents meant to say but they didn't know how to spell it so they took a wild guess and came up with Wandy. That explanation fits probably 30% of the names in Miami.

Yeah makes sense. Of course my post was just a joke.. but I have definitely seen some pretty out there spellings of names and I’m not even talking about these youngsters who try to put quirky and modern twists on common names like “Jeysen” instead of Jason or “Keleigh” instead of Kelly.

😂

The Orioles got their ace. Baltimore announced the acquisition of 2021 NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes from the Brewers for rookie infielder Joey Ortiz, left-hander DL Hall, and their 2024 Competitive Balance Round A draft pick (#34 overall). Milwaukee designated lefty Ethan Small for assignment to clear the necessary 40-man roster spot.

Great deal for the Orioles, really a minimal cost for them given their wealth of prospects.  There was no spot at all for Ortiz, and the Orioles seem to be a bit lower on Hall recently (pay no attention to what Mike Elias says, but what Brandon Hyde does with his players).

Brewers are higher on Hall and see him as a fixture in their rotation, so we will see what happens.

Ortiz is good insurance for when they do make another trade or two here soon, as again the Orioles literally had no room to play Ortiz at all.

Jose Altuve is remaining in Houston. The Astros announced the signing of the former MVP to a five-year extension that covers the 2025-29 seasons. Altuve, a client of the Boras Corporation, is reportedly guaranteed $125MM. He’ll collect a $15MM signing bonus. Altuve’s previous deal called for a $26MM salary in 2024 that remains in place. He’s now due $30MM annually between 2025-27 and respective $10MM figures from 2028-29. He had been slated to reach free agency next offseason.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/rangers-adolis-garcia-agree-to-two-year-deal.html

The Rangers have agreed to a two-year contract with star outfielder Adolis Garcia, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The deal is still pending completion of a physical, and there are still some details to be finalized, but the general framework is in place. Garcia is represented by Octagon.

The agreement comes on the same day that Garcia and the team were slated to head to an arbitration hearing. Garcia’s camp had filed for a $6.9MM salary for the upcoming season, while the team had countered at $5MM. That hearing will now no longer be necessary, and the two-year term on the deal eliminates the chance of a hearing next offseason as well. Garcia will still be under club control for one final year after this two-year pact draws to a close, so the two sides will again have to deal with a potential arb hearing in the 2025-26 offseason.

---

Garcia is guaranteed $14MM over the two-year term, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The contract contains a series of escalators based on MVP voting that could further increase his salary in year two of the deal. The contract can max out at $20.25MM total over two years, Heyman adds.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/pirates-reportedly-in-serious-talks-with-yasmani-grandal.html

The Pirates and catcher Yasmani Grandal are in agreement on a contract, per reporter Francys Romero. Robert Murray of FanSided reported earlier this evening that the sides were in “serious talks” regarding a deal. Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the deal guarantees Grandal $2.5MM and includes incentives, with MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf noting the contract is a one-year deal.

The Phillies have agreed to a one-year, $2MM contract with right-hander Spencer Turnbull, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post (X link).  Turnbull, a client of the Boras Corporation, can also earn another $2MM in incentives.
