rmc523
https://www.mlb.com/news/2024-baseball-hall-of-fame-election-results Masterful third baseman Adrián Beltré and decorated Twins catcher Joe Mauer both achieved entry into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on their first BBWAA ballot, while power-hitting Rockies first baseman Todd Helton was elected on his sixth try, in results revealed on MLB Network. The BBWAA-elected trio will join Contemporary Baseball Era Committee electee Jim Leyland in an induction ceremony to be held on July 21 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, N.Y. Slugger Gary Sheffield (63.9%) was not able to get the requisite support in his 10th and final try. Sheffield, and the Marlins' only hope anytime soon of a HOF guy, will now have to count on one of those committees down the road to add him. SirFishFan
What's the deal with Gary Sheffield not being inducted? I don't remember the reason. Was it roids related or something? I mean he had 500+ career HRs. I don't get it. Perhaps it was because his career BA was under .300 and he didn't have over 3000 hits. Beltre hit less than 500 HR and had less than .300 career BA but he had over 3000 hits. Helton and Mauer both had less than 3000 hits and 500 HRs but both of them had a career BA over .300 Well, I remember more than 20 years ago that Sheffield made the comment that if was elected to the HOF he would have a Marlins hat on his plaque. That was always something I hoped to see in my life, a Marlins HOFer.. Not just a HOFer that played a year or 2 for the Fish. But unfortunately with the way that baseball is and the way the Marlins FO seem to be. I don't know if they ever will have a HOF caliber player stick around long enough to be a Marlins representative in the HOF.

But Sheffield has never been proven to take any PEDs meanwhile David Ortiz is in the HOF and he's definitely been proven to take PEDs. Sheffield not getting in is a joke. A lot of it also had to do with Sheffield kinda being a dick while Ortiz was this loveable teddy bear. It shouldn't matter but it's not robots voting so that plays a big part. Yeah, apparently he was on that list of names suspected of it, and that's the excuse that's been given. Hopefully that committee will end up putting him in, and with a Marlins hat......it'd totally be a MLB thing to do for him to not have a Marlins hat on. I’ve always thought about that. Like Sheffield requesting to the have the Marlins but then MLB putting the Yankees or Dodgers or even saying something like “well, you played for so many teams during your career that it wouldn’t be fair to just put one team. So you will have no team on your hat!”
Das Texan
I am honestly a bit surprised that Mauer made it in his first year. But this should bode well for a certain former Cardinal catcher who will be eligible in 4 years.

And I saw a recent interview where Sheffield was defending himself for just having a more competitive and less playful attitude so it shouldn't even matter. He said he saw that from Andre Dawson as well. Some people play with their head down or with a scowl on their face instead of a constant smile, doesn't make them less of a person or a player. canada-marlin24
Looking at Sheffield's numbers it is beyond pathetic that he's not in. Over 9,000 at bats, nearly 2700 hits, over 1600 runs, 467 doubles, 509 home runs, almost 1700 RBI, 253 stolen bases and an OBP near .400 and OPS over 900. Meanwhile, someone like Brooks Robinson who was great defensively, had a career .723 OPS.

SilverBullet
There's also some crazy stat about how seldom he struck out considering his power numbers.

Brooks ... you win 16 consecutive gold gloves, that's kind of Hall of Fame worthy in its own right. His best 10 years offensively, .766 OPS - not world-beating but solid, especially in the time period. Averaged 20 homers a year in that span. Noteworthy. Two titles. One MVP. You can't always look at who made the HOF in the context of today's game, ya feel? BUT. You are correct on Sheffield. Perhaps the Veteran's Committee in a few years will right this wrong. Andruw, Wagner need to be in. I won't be shocked if Beltran gets in eventually.
