Well, with the start of the new season, that means a new edition of the Attendance thread.

We'll now have 3 years of data to compare (2022-2025), so it'll be interesting to see how it stacks up (maybe someday I'll go all the way back for the entire Sherman era, but we'll see).

Some initial notes on the season schedule that may affect attendance. This year, our game days of the week for attendance was negatively impacted vs. last year, meaning we have fewer weekend games and more weekday games: Monday (+3), Tuesday (+1), Wednesday (+1), Thursday (-2), Friday (-1), Saturday (-1), Sunday (-1)

We do have a weekend series against the Yankees later in the year, which will surely have high attendance regardless of the team's play.

Now, looking at Opening day, which fell on a Thursday last year as well. This year, official attendance was 31,590, last year's was 32,564.

Here's a chart for the last 4 opening days:

I'm expecting attendance to drop quite a bit from last year, with the hangover from 2023's success long gone, and last year's terrible season fresh in people's minds.

I'll update this thread periodically as we get more data.

No but seriously, this is good stuff and I'm looking forward to the thread as the season progresses.

That said, my attendance prediction for tonight: 8,743

I appreciate it! I know it IS nerdy, but I find stuff like this interesting.

This opening series against the Pirates will actually be a direct comparison to last year, because we played the Pirates in a 4-game series for our opening series last year too, and also over a Thurs-Sun period.

Attendance of those 4 games in that series was 76,318, so we'll see how it compares this year. We're already down 974.

I'll actually be more optimistic and say we'll get 11k, 12k and 13 k over the next 3 games (last year was 13/14/15, for reference) because of early opening series hype+ weekend.

Also, our next series is against NYM.

So here's the result for attendance during the opening 4-game series against the Pirates. Last year's opening series was also against the pirates in a 4-game series, and also took place on Thursday through Sunday, so it's a direct comparison to last year.

Total attendance for last year was 76,318. This year, it was 66,877, a drop of 9,441.

I'm guessing this is a sign of things to come unless they somehow maintain good performance throughout the season (doubtful).

I'm sure this next series against the Mets will have good attendance because Mets/New York, but I'm sure overall we'll see a sizable decrease this year..

My prediction for game 2 was somewhat of a joke, especially it being a Friday game. I was only off by about 800, that's depressing

Yeah, there's always a dropoff from opening day to the next game, but that's crazy.

Interestingly enough, the drop was exactly 22,000 even.

Sadly, This group doesn't seem to get the message that this town supports a winner.

This group legit does not care if it fields a winner as long as they keep taking in the revenue sharing. Alter how that process works so that only teams that spend regularly get to collect and Bruce will sell in a heartbeat.

Update after the Nats series (3rd home series of the year).....attendance is down 15k on the year.

image.png

Note - just a reminder that spikes and dips in attendance, and figures vs. last year are heavily dependent on the opponents......for example, our first 3 home series opponents last year were Pittsburgh, LAA, and Atlanta, vs. this year, Pittsburgh, Mets, and Nats. Attendance in series 1 & 3 were lower this year, but series 2 vs the Mets was higher than last year's 2nd series vs. the Angels.

I don't think it deserves its own thread, so since it's sort of tied to this, figured I'd mention it here.

ESPN did a 'watchability" rating for all the teams. We ranked 28th.

I was going to guess Athletics and White Sox so I was half right

They ranked the Athletics 13th. 🤷‍♂️

We're 8-7 and have lots of walk-off wins and ranked 28th !? yeah we're the Marlins.

You spend 95 percent of your posts criticizing the organization and you're surprised when fans don't show up?

In this case, he's referring to the "watchability" report ESPN did. I think his thought is that since they're 8-7 with walk off wins, that they'd be higher in the "watchability" department (assuming it's an updated list.....i.e. an 8-7 team should theoretically be more "watchable" than a 2-13 team). But they had a variety of factors that went into the rating, not just record and style of win.

You don't criticize this organization !?

You totally missed my point. Lol.

The point is that you're criticizing the ranking of the team not being "watchable" when all you do is criticize the organization for sucking. You don't want to watch, so why would expect anyone else to?
