January 12, 2004

CINCINNATI (Ticker) - Veteran outfielder John Vander Wal has hooked up with his eighth major league team, signing a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Vander Wal made $550,000 last season with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Known as one of baseball's premier pinch-hitters, Vander Wal is fifth on the all-time list with 125 pinch-hits and third with 17 pinch-hit homers. Last season, Vander Wal had the second-most at-bats in his career with 327 and produced 14 homers and 45 RBI, including a major league-best three grand slams.

ADVERTISEMENTVander Wal's best season came in 2000 for the Pittsburgh Pirates when he had 24 homers, 94 RBI and a .299 batting average.

The 37-year-old Vander Wal has played for Montreal, Colorado, San Diego, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, the New York Yankees and Milwaukee.

Damn i wanted him... :angry

Reds signed John Vander Wal (a player named a few times in this forum.) Good pinch hitter, can play both corners and first. Age 37. One year, $700,000.

Nice bench pick-up.

Vander Wal is the kind of player competing teams look for in June, not January. if O'Brien flips JVW in June for a mid-level mid prosepct i'll be ecstatic and call this an excellent signing instead of an average signing.

Damn i wanted him... :angry

ask in June, and ye shall recieve.
