If there was a way to get Hidaglo down into the $7-$9 million dollar range, i think he would be worth it, and here's why: He would be a one-year committment (which is what we are obviously looking for these days), a legit power threat at the 5 spot (.309 BA, .572 SLG, 28 homers last year), and most importantly, $2 million of his deal is actually deferred....it's a buy-out of the final year of the deal, which would not be payable until next year, i assume. January 14, 200422 yr Author in order for Houston to eat the contract or some of it, we would have to give up a pretty good prospect I would think i guess, but some teams will do some crazy things to get rid of payroll. look at us paying Mike Hampton to play against us in the NL East. it would just appear to me that Hidalgo is a "gotsta go" situation, given that the Astros have other offensive weapons, aparently have a good OF prospect to fill Hidalgo's position, and the fact that they recently took on $16+ million worth of salary in Pettitte and Clemens.

January 14, 200422 yr He works for the Marlins because it's a one year commitment, but I don't see him being a "must dump" from the Astros POV, because it's a one year thing at this point, and with Clemens and Pettitte there now, they're trying to win this year, and Hidalgo is a perfect hitter for their park...

Niner is an excellent #6 hitter, but at a #5 guy he's not really going to be scary enough to force opposing pitchers to pitch to Lowell in the 4 spot.

It was Snare that went to Texas, Levinski went to Baltimore along with Batista for Conine. Baltimore really took all of our minor league pitching in the Conine trade.
January 14, 200422 yr we still have plenty of minor league pitching TSwift That's tradeable? I don't think so. Allison isn't going anywhere, and Levinski and Batista were two guys who were supposedly untouchable. I didn't mean it literally that there isn't any left, but guys like Justin Wayne are past being prospects and approaching being "washed up." Our farm system isn't as depletead as, say, the Yankees, but we're getting to the point where we can't trade away a lot more because then we'll jeopardize our ability to fill our roster from within...
