Scott Sauerbeck - R - Boston Red Sox Jan 16

Free agent Scott Sauerbeck reportedly will undergo shoulder surgery next week and miss the season.

This could explain some of his problems from the second half of last season. Sauerbeck has failed physicals for both the Cubs and Reds this winter, forcing him to undergo surgery.

Notebook: Pirates looking to fill needs

Under the knife

The Pirates are looking to add a veteran left-handed reliever before spring training, but they won't be bringing back Scott Sauerbeck.

Sauerbeck will undergo shoulder surgery next week and won't pitch this season.

Sauerbeck lives in Bradenton and has been working out on his own at Pirate City. He injured his shoulder last summer after the Pirates traded him to the Boston Red Sox, who non-tendered him in December.

Sauerbeck was hoping to pitch for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds, but he failed each team's physical. That prompted his decision to have season-ending surgery.

Ron Villone is still available.

:(

Graeme Lloyd for a return stint?

Oh God no. :banghead

Well I guess that takes care of that.

i really doubt that Lloyd wants to play for Loria again ... he was never a big fan of him in montreal or down here for that matter.

Villone ... not bad, but i would have rather gone for Saurbeck ... noooooooooooooooooooooooooo :confused

Rusch, moss and villone are available but we may go into camp with grasequi, tejera and phelps.

Maels Rodriguez is not a lefty but he sure would be an interesting addition. He could have the same kind of year Contreras did las year. Contreras spent the first few months battling through the minors and then showed his nasty stuff towards the end of the year. We could have him throwing 100 for us in the 8th before benitez comes in. What kind of dollars and length do you think it will take to get maels?

If we could somehow get Maels' price down it would be a nice PR boost to have a triple digit throwing Cuban.

ah man....that stinks about saurbeck.

Horrible news for him and the market for his services.

I think moss is going to tampa bay.

sign him to a cheap 2 yr deal.

actully that's not bad of an idea....but really cheap....maybe 3 yrs or 2yrs with an option for a third year.

He won't be had cheap. The Mariners and Red Sox are looking at him as a starter, not to mention the Yanks looking at him as a bullpen option. The contract that Jose Contraras received is being used to gauge how much to pay this guy, who is supposedly better.

villone has been signed, forgot what team though.

what is contreras' contract?

4 yrs 32 million. wow! that is a lot of dough. he is probably out of our range.
