Players deal with 'Harry the Heckler'

SAN DIEGO -- Todd Hollandsworth knows he'll never shut up Harry the Heckler, no matter how well the Marlins outfielder plays.

Harry Maker, 51, is the chatterbox who sits in the first row of the left-field bleachers at Qualcomm Stadium, and Hollandsworth, who played six season in Los Angeles, is one of his favorite targets.

"Harry doesn't stop,'' said Hollandsworth, who is hitting.395 in his past 13 games. "But Harry's not malicious, he's a hometown fan. He is persistent and that's how he tries to get in your head.''

Maker's heckling earned him an interview with Marlins television reporter Craig Minervini on Monday. Minervini asked for a taste of Maker's work. The problem was, Marci Hollandsworth was up past midnight and wondered why the Marlins' affiliate was prompting Maker to heckle her husband.

Hollandsworth received a call from Marci while on the team bus. He happened to be sitting behind Minervini.

"I said, 'They did what? On Florida television?' " Hollandsworth said. He tapped Minervini on the shoulder: "Are you guys throwing me under the bus?'' he asked, smiling.

Maker's favorite lines to Hollandsworth: "Hey, Hollandsworth, drop a letter.'' And "Hollandsworthless.''

"He needs new material,'' Hollandsworth said.

Maker, an Internet consultant, is easily recognized, not just by his voice, but his handlebar moustache, ponytail, old Tony Gwynn jersey and Padres hat. Matt Williams and Mark Grace once met with Maker to provide him with material for their Arizona teammate Luis Gonzalez. Maker occasionally asks the left fielder for a bat and in return he promises to stop the heckling. He has several at his home. None, though, is from Barry Bonds.

"I've been flipped off, I've been cussed at,'' Maker said. "But Bonds would flip me off all the time. Now, he doesn't acknowledge me.''

Maker never curses or gets personal. Tuesday, a fan yelled something about Hollandsworth's mother and Maker told him to stop getting personal.
