August 2, 200422 yr I thought this was amazing....I never realized anyone had a monster season like this. LINK Thursday, July 29, 2004 ST. PETERSBURG, FL?Joe Bauman, the greatest home run hitter in Minor League Baseball history, will be honored this year and in the future with his name on the trophy that goes to the top power hitter each season, it was announced today. The Joe Bauman Trophy will be presented at the Baseball Winter Meetings each December to the winner of the Minor League Baseball Round-Tripper Contest, who will also receive a check for $200 for each home run that he hits. Ryan Howard, first baseman for the Reading Phillies of the Eastern League, currently has the best home run total in the Minor Leagues this season with 37. Bauman hit an incredible 72 home runs for the Roswell (NM) Rockets in the Longhorn League in 1954 and he achieved that total while playing in just 138 games. That remained the best total at any level of professional baseball until San Francisco?s Barry Bonds hit 73 to set the Major League record in 2001. Bauman, who still makes his home in Roswell, was no one-season wonder. Over a four-season span from 1952-55, he had home run totals of 50, 53, 72 and 46. But that 1954 season was truly special for Bauman. His batting average was an even .400 as he had 224 runs-batted-in and scored 188 runs. In addition to his 72 round-trippers, Joe stroked 35 doubles and 3 triples. in a nutshell: .400 BA 224 RBI 188 Runs 72 HR 35 Doubles 3 Triples that's just sick.
