November 5, 200421 yr MIAMI -- If Admin Bowa wants to be the Marlins' bench coach, the job is his. Bowa told MLB.com on Wednesday that he is considering the offer and will make up his mind by Thursday. "I have some personal things to work out," Bowa said Wednesday afternoon. "I am still talking with them. The Marlins have been very professional about it. I just have to work out a couple of personal decisions." Dismissed as the Phillies manager on Oct. 2, Bowa guided Philadelphia to a second-place finish in the National League East. But with high expectations, not reaching the playoffs led to his departure. Bowa, 57, compiled a 337-308 record with the Phillies, including an 85-75 mark in 2004. Bowa has enjoyed a long friendship with Marlins manager Jack McKeon, who hired him to manage the Padres in the 1987 season. Over the past two seasons, Bowa's Phillies and McKeon's Marlins built a strong rivalry as the teams battled for playoff positioning. While they've been competitors, they've developed a friendly rivalry. But McKeon has spoken highly of Bowa, praising his knowledge of the game. On Wednesday, Bowa spoke highly of Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest and team owner Jeffrey Loria. He said his decision to wait is based on personal reasons that he wants to sort out before committing to another big league job.
