The new system is messed up. Dusty Baker and Mike Scoscia were left with 5 picks to make, and both had 4 or 5 teams totally unrepresented to take players from. To make matters worse, they had to take 4 pitchers, which means many of the worst teams (Tampa, Pittsburgh, NY Mets) had to be represented by pitchers, because there were no hitting slots available under the new mandatory 12-pitcher rule after the new player voting. So instead of Huff or Baldelli, Scoscia has to take Lance Carter. Instead of Giles or Kendall, Baker has to take Mike Williams. Well, there's no justification for Mike Williams, but you get the idea. Ditto Benitez over Burnitz.

Still, Baker screwed it up with his leftover picks, for which he had 7, 4 pitchers and 3 hitters. He should have left old Giants player of his Russ Ortiz home and taken Dontrelle Willis or Hideo Nomo. In auto reps, he should have taken Brian Giles (Pirates) and Scott Williamson (Reds) instead of Aaron Boone (Reds) and Mike Williams (Pirates) to even out the pitcher/hitter situation.

Scoscia, for his part, was really in a bind. Because of the DH, he had to represent Detroit, Tampa and Cleveland in 5 picks, 4 of which were pitchers. He took Dmitri Young because any Tiger pitcher would have been a joke. That left him 4 pitchers and no hitters, and thus no chance to take Milton Bradley, Aubrey Huff or Rocco Baldelli as team reps. So it was C.C. Sabathia and Lance Carter, the latter whose selection the analysts won't understand because they don't see what the system did to the managers. With his final 2 wild card pitching picks, he took a couple relievers. Shigetoshi Hasegawa was deserving. With Mike Sweeney winning the player vote, I would have left Mike MacDougal home with my final pick and taken another deserving starter, like Pedro Martinez, Gil Meche, Roger Clemens or Tim Hudson.

Both managers were put in a tough spot, and the purpose of 12 pitchers escapes me. How many innings do we need to be ready for? And by taking all these relievers, how does this really ready the pitching staff for a marathon?
