That's tough but I can easily say the worst are 311's cover of the cure and Dashboard confessional trying to be REM.

 

Nirvana's cover of "The Man who sold the world by David Bowie, is the best I can think of at this moment.

Best:

All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix

The great covers in my opinion are those that were better than the original. The three that come to mind in this case are:

 

"All Along the Watchtower" -Jimi Hendrix (Dylan used Hendrix's version in every concert after it came out)

"Turn the Page" -Metallica (of Bob Seagar)

"Mad World" (I forget the artists, from Donnie Darko)

 

A couple covers that were very very good but not quite as great as the original were "Sympathy for the Devil" by Guns N' Roses (covering the Rolling Stones) and Jimi Hendrix's rendition of "Like A Rolling Stone" (Again, of Bob Dylan).

Behind Blue Eyes was a horrible cover. An insult to the Who.

 

 

Dave Matthews' cover of Tangerine by Led Zep is pretty good, Joe Cocker also did a good job covering a couple of Beatles songs (With a little help from my friends & She came in throuh the bathroom window).

Dave Matthew's version of Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower with the four part solos is also pretty solid.
