The SportsLine Team Rankings are derived by creating an average of each team's positional players as well as top 5 starters and top 3 relievers. These players' averages are then combined to create the overall ranking. Players are penalized for games missed and pitchers need to meet innings pitched criteria to make the list. The Rankings are updated daily.

Power rankings we were 9th last week, and are now 5th.

POWER RANKINGS

Current Team Previous

1 Chicago White Sox 1

First step to ruling the world: ruling Chicago. Check.

2 St. Louis Cardinals 2

Well, the prediction they would take over No. 1 this week didn't hold, but they are closing the gap -- by widening their league-best division lead to seven games on the sub-.500 NL Central.

3 Baltimore Orioles 3

Going 3-3 vs. the Royals and Phillies might be a precursor to a hard lesson for the 'new-money' O's. You have to dominate the cellar-dwellers, because needing to go .500-plus vs. contenders is much tougher down the stretch.

4 Boston Red Sox 5

Their next 10 games come against their three top challengers in the AL East, including the next six on the road. The Sox should find out in this stretch whether they're up for their title defense.

5 Florida Marlins 9

Have won first games on homestand after a West Coast trip. Facing Phillies and Mets at home should be a great way to build a cushion in the NL East on the injury-hit Braves.

6 Arizona Diamondbacks 8

Potential worst-to-first campaign gets true test vs. Padres and Dodgers on six-game homestand.

7 San Diego Padres 7

Lost two, and Mark Loretta, after eight-game home winning streak. Now they hit the road for key division series at Arizona and San Francisco.

8 Los Angeles Angels 6

The offense was struggling with Vladimir Guerrero. With him gone for two weeks, the Angels face the No. 1 White Sox (seven games), the No. 4 Red Sox (three) and No. 9 Braves (three). Outside of a three-game home breather vs. the Royals, it is a brutal stretch.

9 Atlanta Braves 4

It was a rough week. They lost two-thirds of their rotation to the DL and had to fiddle with their closing situation, losing five of their past seven. Like always for Bobby Cox and company, it should just be a temporary blip.

10 Minnesota Twins 10

They are winning more than 58 percent of the time, and they're still five games behind the Central-leading White Sox at the quarter pole.

11 New York Yankees 11

The $100 million rotation is heating up. Most likely because they are competing to see who gets to stick around when Roger Clemens joins them by midseason.

12 Texas Rangers 14

In Saturday's blowout, they became the 15th team in major-league history to hit eight or more homers in a game. They also tied an AL record with seven players hitting at least one homer in a game. It is just starting to heat up in Texas -- well, in this part of the state anyway.

13 Los Angeles Dodgers 12

They are struggling vs. top competition, a bad sign for their prospects as a contender.

14 Washington Nationals 13

With all the injuries -- Jose Vidro and Brad Wilkerson the latest -- it is hard to imagine how this team remains this high. But, they continue to thrive in Washington.

15 New York Mets 15

They were close but no cigar vs. the Yankees. Sounds like a good season slogan for the 'New Mets.'

16 Toronto Blue Jays 16

We should find out just how good they are as they face the Red Sox and Twins at home this week.

17 Chicago Cubs 22

Carlos Zambrano's alleged Internet-induced elbow issue is the latest circus act. There is no truth to the rumor he is one of those arguing with fans of the No. 1 White Sox on the CBS SportsLine.com message board.

18 San Francisco Giants 17

Jason Schmidt returns. Tyler Walker takes hold as the closer. Now, Barry Bonds is resuming rehab. The outlook is improving at least.

19 Cleveland Indians 23

They improved to 6-12 in one-run games Monday. The question is: Why are they playing so many close games? Victor Martinez has to wake up sometime, right?

20 Philadelphia Phillies 21

Jim Thome's return will help the excellent starts by Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell surge even higher. Absolutely the most dangerous cellar-dweller in baseball.

21 Detroit Tigers 19

They had a 4.04 rotation ERA through 40 starts, No. 4 in the AL and 1.5 runs per games less than the comparable figure from 2004.

22 Milwaukee Brewers 18

First-base coach Dave Nelson: "We went from being the Rolls-Royce of stolen bases last year to a Chevette this year. And, we're working our way down to Model T." And base running is the least of their worries.

23 Pittsburgh Pirates 20

They are 1-19 when trailing after eight innings. But the good news is they are 18-4 when leading after eight. This bullpen will be stocking some contenders in the second half.

24 Seattle Mariners 27

They won five of nine games on the homestand after having won just four games at home all season before. They now hit the road.

25 Oakland Athletics 25

Somewhere the Moneyball critics are smiling, especially the ones who said Billy Beane won solely because of the Big Three

26 Cincinnati Reds 26

A Graves mistake? No way. He was awful. An important lesson to learn here: The fans are always right to boo.

27 Houston Astros 24

Their 2-20 record on the road is the worst in baseball and downright embarrassing for a franchise that was one game away from the World Series.

28 Tampa Bay Devil Rays 28

If you ain't got pitching ... Devil Rays starters are 7-23 with a major-league-high 5.94 ERA. They have just one victory in the past 16 games.

29 Colorado Rockies 30

They get Coors Field hangovers, too. The Rockies have lost 27 of 31 on the road, dating back to last season.

30 Kansas City Royals 29

It is hard to like anything about this team except RHP Zack Greinke. Even he is winless in his past 13 starts and 0-5 this season. Hardly justice for his 3.83 ERA in nine starts.
