GREENSBORO, NC) The Florida Marlins announced over the weekend that LHP Matt Yourkin has been sent to double-A Carolina, infielder Cole Seifrig has been reinstated from Greensboro's disabled list, infielder Ryan Schade has been transferred from Greensboro to high-A Jupiter and RHP Jose Garcia has joined the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

 

 

Matt Yourkin pitched in 21 games this season for Greensboro. In 30.1 innings pitched, Yourkin was 1-1-2 with a 2.67 ERA. The reliever allowed nine earned runs and 25 hits. He walked seven batters and struck out 33. The lefty did not allow a run in the month of April holding a 0.00 ERA in ten games played and 14.0 innings pitched. 24-years-old in July, Yourkin was selected by Florida as a free agent in 2003.

Cole Seifrig was originally on Greensboro's active roster at the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, he left the team in mid-April after being diagnosed with mononucleosis, or as it is referred to by most people, mono. Originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2003 first year player draft, the infielder had played ten games with Greensboro this season before receiving medical treatment. He was hitting .167 with six hits including one double. Seifrig is ranked by Baseball America as the 26th prospect in the Marlins organization and played the entire 2004 season with the Greensboro team. His first performance back this season happened yesterday, June 5, while Greensboro is on the road in Greenville, SC. During Sunday's performance Cole was 0-3 with one RBI and two strikeouts.

 

 

 

To make room for the new infielder, Grasshopper Ryan Schade has been promoted to high-A Jupiter in the Florida State League. Schade joined Greensboro while the Grasshoppers were on the road in Delmarva, MD in early May. In his 13 games played with Greensboro, Schade was hitting .357 with 3 RBI and 2 doubles. In Schade's most recent game he was 1-3 with a double and one strikeout. The 26-year-old was selected as a free agent in 2003 and is currently planning a fall wedding with his fianc?.

A new addition to the Greensboro roster is right-handed pitcher Jose Garcia. Garcia joins the Grasshoppers from extended spring training in Jupiter, FL. Only 20 years old, this is Garcia's fourth season with the Florida Marlins organization. He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2001. Since then, he has spent all three seasons in the Dominican Summer League. During his three seasons with the DSL, Garcia was 10-11 with a 1.92 ERA. He allowed 146 hits and 38 earned runs while striking out 213 batters.

The Grasshoppers are not just losing players, but they are also losing games. The team has recently lost 14 of their last 16 games played and is currently on a nine-game losing streak. They will play the Greenville Bombers again on Monday night in Greenville, SC to finish out the four game series against the single- A Boston Red Sox affiliate.

Yeah I was wondering about Yourkin because a couple days ago I looked and he was listed on the Mudcats roster but didnt have a number and there was no announcement.

 

Will be interesting to see how he does skipping over Hi-A.
