Lopes, Page, Beasley join Nationals coaching staff

WASHINGTON ? (AP) ? Former major league manager Davey Lopes has joined the Washington Nationals as their first-base coach.

Lopes was hired Thursday, along with new hitting coach Mitchell Page and third-base coach Tony Beasley. Pitching coach Randy St. Claire and bench coach Eddie Rodriguez were retained from manager Frank Robinson's 2005 staff.

The team still needs to hire a bullpen coach.

As a player, Lopes helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the 1981 World Series and he led the National League in steals twice. The Nationals had an NL-low 45 steals last season and were caught stealing a league-high 45 times.

Lopes managed the Milwaukee Brewers for two-plus seasons, and spent eight of the past 11 years on the San Diego Padres' coaching staff.

Page, a minor league hitting instructor for the Nationals last season, was the hitting coach for the 2004 NL champion St. Louis Cardinals. He left the Cardinals after that year's World Series and entered an alcohol treatment facility.

Beasley was a manager in the Pittsburgh Pirates' minor league system.
