Treanor to lead PCL All-Star staff

Field staff to also include Von Joshua, Ken Howell

With just over six weeks until the 20th Annual Triple-A All-Star Game, the host Albuquerque Isotopes announced the Pacific Coast League field staff today.

Dean Treanor, manager of the Isotopes, will assume the same role for the PCL All-Stars in the July 11 contest.

Treanor, 59, has managed the 'Topes (Marlins) for the past three years, as well as in 2003, their inaugural season (he was Florida's Minor League pitching coordinator in 2004).

Before joining the Marlins' organization in 2002, he served as pitching coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers system for several years, including 1999 and 2000 with the Triple-A Albuquerque Dukes, back when Albuquerque was a Dodgers' affiliate.

Treanor also coached in the Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres and Cleveland Indians systems.

A pitcher in the Cincinnati Reds' Minor League system for a few years in the early '70s, Treanor retired in 1975 due to shoulder trouble and was a police officer and undercover narcotics agent in the San Luis Obispo (Cal.) Police Department before returning to baseball in 1988.

The PCL All-Star hitting coach will be veteran Von Joshua, the hitting coach for the Iowa Cubs.

Joshua spent his 10-year playing career with the Dodgers (in two different stints), Giants, Brewers and Padres. He also played for a year in the Senior Professional Baseball Association a few years before he began his coaching career.

Joshua coached in the White Sox organization several years before moving over to the Cubs' system, where he was hitting coach at Double-A West Tenn from 2003 to 2005 before moving up to Iowa in 2006.

Handling the PCL pitchers for the night will be Las Vegas 51s pitching coach Ken Howell.

Howell has been a pitching coach in the Dodgers' system since 2003, when he took over the staff at Advanced A Vero Beach, spending 2003 and 2004 in the Florida State League, 2005 at Double-A Jacksonville and the last two seasons at Vegas.

He also spent the majority of his playing career with the Dodgers, from 1984 to 1988, before winding up his last two seasons with the Phillies.

Isotopes trainer Steve Miller will fill that same capacity for the All-Star club.

Albuquerque becomes the first city to earn the honor of being a "repeat host" for the big event, which kicked off originally in 1988 in Buffalo. The New Mexico city last hosted the game in 1993, back when they were the Dukes and a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate.

In honor of that long-time association the club had with the Dodgers, the Fan Fest leading up to the game will have a Dodgers theme, and the fact that all three field staff members selected to lead the PCL club have Dodgers ties is not coincidental.

The Fan Fest gets started on Saturday, July 7, and will feature exhibits, interactive games and all sorts of meet-and-greets with current and former Major League legends with Dodgers ties.

Former Dodgers stars Steve Garvey, Ron Cey and Bill Russell, who all played for the Albuquerque Dukes as well, will be among the former teammates that will reunite at the event, which will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center July 7-8.

The International League will be announcing its field staff for the game on Thursday, May 31.

The International League will announce its All-Star team on June 27, with the PCL roster scheduled to be revealed the next day.

For the second year in a row, fans will be able to be part of that selection process as they'll be able to vote for their favorite players on any of the 30 Triple-A teams' websites as well as at MiLB.com. Details on how fans can vote will be announced on June 1.
