August 3, 200719 yr We'll there goes another pretty good one. Freddi Adu signed with Benfica of Portugal to play for the next couple of seasons. What intriges me is the miniscule fee that benfica payed for an 18 year old kid with tons of promise. The transfer was only $2 million ... a joke for him / steal for Benfica well the MLS brought a big gun in Beckham but its unable to keep one of the best home grown talents available :confused best of luck to Freddi
August 3, 200719 yr I guess Freddi Adu is thought more of overseas than here. They were trashing him on FSC, making fun of how Real Salt Lake hasn't won a game with him in the line-up and he acts like little brat on the field. Honestly, he's been a huge disappointment.
August 3, 200719 yr He'll benefit from the move to Europe, but I don't see him really amounting to much. His hype was as a 13 year old in America. There are tons of 13 year olds in Argentina, Brasil, England, Spain, Italy, France that come up with hype and turn out to actually be worth something. I wish the kid luck, but I don't seeing him panning out.
August 5, 200719 yr He needs the trip to Europe. To the comment about Americans losing a homegrown talent to Europe but bringing Becks.....that's exactly what needs to happen. As many of our non superstars need to head over to get their lumps in Europe against the best competition, while the clubs here do their best to try and maneuver themselves to pick up as many foreigners as possible. The interests of the national team and the league are mutually exclusive, it just so happens that MLS does not suffer too much from losing someone like Adu to Europe. American stars aren't getting people in the seats anyways.
